The Mazda RX-7 continues to captivate enthusiasts after 31 years since its debut. These days, if you want a sporty model from the brand, you'll have to settle for a Mazda Miata. When released in 1992, the third-generation RX-7 stunned the world with its remarkable performance, thanks to its compact 1.3-liter twin-rotor Wankel engine, delivering an impressive 252 horsepower.
The lightweight design, tipping the scales at around 2,700 pounds, made the RX-7 an ideal canvas for tuners to unleash creativity. Proving its enduring prowess against more modern competitors, a recently released video featuring YouTuber Misha Charoudin piloting a slightly modified RX-7 at the Nurburgring is a must-watch.
The engine, which had been rebuilt and modified to mimic the sound of a space rocket during takeoff, proved to be excessively loud for the Nurburgring. Any vehicle generating over 130 decibels is prohibited from participating on the racetrack. Consequently, this Mazda was promptly disqualified after completing only two laps due to its excessive noise levels when driven at maximum speed.
The acceleration of this RX-7 is just wild. The turbo kicks in around 4,500 rpm, propelling the tachometer and speedometer with astonishing speed. The tuned RX-7's top speed exceeds the capabilities of its original speed gauge, reaching the 111 mph mark, causing the needle to venture beyond its limits. No wonder there's been a clamor for a new model from Mazda for years.
Throughout the video, we can see the close-to-stock RX-7 tackle multiple cars on the road – some were faster, which prompted the driver to stick to the right side to allow passing. After all, safety should still be on top of everyone's minds, with the Nurburgring implementing more safety precautions.
Misha Charoudin felt the strain on the brakes and the bushings on the control arm, making a second lap unwise. They plan to return with an upgraded and quieter exhaust system. While it may be too loud, at least it isn't too slow for the 'Ring.
