Almost a decade ago, Wiesmann declared bankruptcy. The little German company had been silent for nearly two years when a handful of prototypes of the Wiesmann MF6, a new sports vehicle due later this year, were seen. However, two sports cars have been officially announced for 2022.
Wiesmann was a small German manufacturer that offered a series of very sporty models with a retro feel but with the most advanced BMW technology, as a result of a collaboration with BMW. It was founded in 1985 and was well-known around the world until it died in the summer of 2013 after a lengthy and painful death.
Five years after that long-awaited conclusion, Wiesmann awoke to the announcement of the new GTMF5 Coupé and MF4 Roadster, and just a year later, he was pleased once again with the creation of a whole new model, named the MF 6 and “Project Gecko.” Neither was ever seen in production, only a few spy photos of a sports coupe with an imposing rear spoiler, and it was unclear whether those two prototypes were the MF 6, the Gecko, or the same project.
Wiesmann vanished suddenly, until the brand reinvented itself, revealing a sneak peak of a new sports vehicle coated in fabric, as well as a teaser of what’s to come in 2022. Because the Germans bring a few new and unique models.
The small manufacturer has officially announced this by stating verbatim that “Wiesmann will present a new model in 2022.” Given the market’s recent adjustments, an intriguing new offering will be revealed soon. “Project Gecko” is being developed concurrently with the new model. More announcements will be made in early 2022. To discover more, please register here.
Of course, everything that revolves around this brand is a secret, since what has been fermenting for more than two years without displaying signs of life has been the most absolute of secrets.
To the point where, if the great latest news that we learned about two and a half years ago had secured the mounting of the 4.4-liter V8 biturbo engine of the BMW M models, rumors are circulating that this will not be the case, opening up a real gale of Possibilities: from using the powerful 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six in the M3 and M4 to this electrically-assisted engine, to the announcement of a high-performance electric.
In this new period, everything is conceivable. What is evident from the development is that Wiesmann will stick to the core lines of its design line, with its distinctive vintage aesthetic. The car has a long hood, muscular wheel arches, and a curved roofline that ends in a short, sloping back. The prerequisites for a great comeback.
