We sadly don’t get Alpine cars in South Africa, but the Renault-affiliated French brand is making waves in the concept world with their latest single-seater Alpine Alpenglow which is powered by a Hydrogen combustion engine.

Set to debut at the Paris Motor Show next week, this dramatically styled concept plays with the freedom of out-of-the-box thinking. Many of the external components have been created in a transparent material including the rear active spoiler, bonnet components, pedals and steering wheel paddles. A single, centred driving position is flanked by cylindrical hydrogen tanks that fuel the futuristic-looking machine while the company states that the Alpenglow produces “practically nothing besides steam and riveting engine roars.”

That being said, execs and designers of the Alpenglow state that the model envisages a future of zero-emission despite using an ICE engine to propel itself forward. Since this is still conceptual, no performance figures on the model are available.

No hydrogen-fuelled combustion-powered engines are mass-produced for the public and Alpine’s roadmap has three separate EVs planned, but it would be reassuring to know that the powertrain will live on in another form after mandatory laws ban polluting vehicles.
The new Alpenglow could also foretell what the 2024 LMDh race car from Alpine may look something like. Competing in Formula 1, the French outfit will also be trying its hand in the lucrative endurance series after regulations changes have made it more appealing for brands to compete.
Prior to that time, what we can expect from the company other than the Alpenglow concept here and tentative reveal of their LMDh car ahead of 2024 are the Renault 5 supermini EV, GT X-Over crossover and a silent replacement for the retro-styled A110.
