An electric SUV is in the lead, but a small electric hatch VW doesn't offer stateside is a popular choice in Europe.

- The group’s BEV share of all deliveries in the first nine months of 2022 has reached 6.0%, up from 4.2% in the first nine months of 2021.
Volkswagen’s turn to battery-electric vehicles may have not have been the fastest in the industry, with the diesel crisis of 2015 serving as one of the catalysts, but the automaker has made the most noticeable progress mostly since 2020, in the pandemic era, as demand for EVs has surged. And as the VW Group’s data shows, demand for EVs continues to grow.
VW revealed that its deliveries of battery-electric vehicles have grown by 25% just in the first nine months year-on-year, with the group delivering 366,400 EVs through the end of September, compared to 293,000 EVs delivered in the first nine months of 2021.
By volume alone, Europe is the leading region with 211,900 vehicles delivered in the first nine months of 2022, representing 58% of all VW Group BEV vehicles. China came in second place with 112,700 deliveries, accounting for 31% of all BEV deliveries in the first three quarters, but came in first when in rate of growth, more than doubling its performance compared to the first nine months of 2021.
How did the group’s EVs rank in the first nine months of the year when it came to numbers delivered?
The VW ID.5 joined the ID.4 just recently, giving the SUV a coupe-style profile.
VW
The VW ID.4 and ID.5 came in first with 122,600 units delivered, with VW grouping the two models together. The SUV and its coupe sibling appears to be a solid hit in three main regions, North America, Europe, and China, by a rather significant margin.
The VW ID.3 hatch came in second, recording 45,500 deliveries in the first nine months of the year. VW has kept the ID.3 out of North America due to its size, but it has been very popular in Europe just as production began. Skoda Enyaq iV and its coupe sibling came in third with 36,900 deliveries, with the model being the Czech brand’s version of the ID.4.
In fourth place landed the Audi e-tron and its Sportback sibling, by now the oldest model in the range having debuted in 2019, with 36,400 units delivered. The pricey electric SUV could soon give up its spot to the model that’s now in fifth place—the Audi Q4 e-tron and its Sportback twin with 29,700 units delivered—as production gets rolling. The two smallish SUVs could become Audi’s best-selling EVs in a very short span of time.
The VW ID.6 landed in sixth place, with this China-only crossover sitting above the ID.4 in Volkswagen’s lineup, recording 27,500 deliveries.
The Porsche Taycan and its Cross Turismo version, meanwhile, came in seventh with 25,100 units delivered—an impressive result given its price—with the model quickly finding its own niche in the lineup.
The Cupra Born came in eighth place with 17,500 units delivered, with this performance version of the ID.3 produced alongside its German twin in Zwickau.
The Skoda Enyaq is based on the MEB platform, like the ID.4 to which it is closely related.

What about the group-wide share of battery-electric vehicles, another important metric?
The BEV share of all deliveries in the first nine months has reached 6.0%, up from 4.2% in the first nine months of 2021, and it appears to be accelerating in the closing months of 2022.
This rate of growth did not arrive without headaches, as VW continued dealing with supplier issues and other disruptions in Europe and in China.
“Due to the strong demand and ongoing supply constraints, our order bank remains on a high level,” said Hildegard Wortmann, Member of the Extended Executive Committee. “However, we reached a BEV share of 6.8% in Q3, the highest so far this year.”
