The Suzuki Swift is not only one of South Africa’s best-selling vehicles, but it also happens to be the country’s most-popular imported model.
According to sales data from Naamsa, Suzuki’s small hatchback, which is primarily manufactured at the brand’s plant in India, is the most imported vehicle in South Africa, with a little over 13,000 units having been brought over so far this year.
Not far behind, the second-most-popular import is one from Toyota, specifically its entry-level Urban Cruiser, which is a consistent top-seller with an average of around 1,800 units sold every month.
As a result, more than 12,800 Urban Cruisers have passed through South Africa’s ports this year.
Third on the list is another Toyota, the Starlet, which was updated earlier in 2022 with new features and a more powerful engine, and has sold nearly 10,000 units as of September.
Meanwhile, fourth place goes to VW with its most-affordable crossover, the T-Cross, a total of 8,000 units making their way off the showroom floor, while fifth place is currently held by Renault’s Kwid selling 7,600 units in 2022 thus far.
Hyundai is another popular brand with two top-selling imported models on the list, comprising the Venue crossover, which was recently updated, and the Atos hatchback.
Other imported models which have found favour with local car buyers include the Haval Jolion, Mahindra Scorpio, and Kia Picanto.
