Citroën says its My Ami Beach Buggy sold out in just 17 minutes and 28 seconds. Admittedly, it was a very limited edition, with only 50 units clearly not matching the nearly 1,800 expressions of interest the French brand says it received. Still, such success prompted a rather cheeky poster campaign.
In Paris, Citroën had hung up posters with messages to Elon Musk to mark the rapid sell-out of its small electric vehicle. “Sorry, Elon. The only way to get one is to buy us,” one read. “Sorry, Elon. You will surely be on Mars before you get one,” read another.
While the off-road version of the extra low-price Ami may have been limited, Citroen is actually on to something. Since revealing the quadricycle in early 2020 with a 6,000-euro-tag, the French company says it has won over 21,000 customers in nine countries across Europe to date.
“The dazzling success of this limited edition shows just how incredibly enthusiastic people are about exclusive versions of this mobility object,” Citroen said in today’s statement.
On our site, too, enthusiasm ran high indeed – our Ami review in September 2020 remains one of the most commented articles with interest ranging as far as the USA.
The regular Ami is, fortunately, available in less limited numbers across Europe and the UK, where it was also released in a cargo version. The spec has mainly remained the same: the 5.5-kWh-battery claims a range of 46 miles or 75 kilometres, and the LEV has a max speed of 45 km/h, making it suitable for driving without a license (only a moped license is required) in most countries (not the UK). Prices in Britain start at £7,695 and £7,995 for the My Ami Cargo.
And the Ami is a true friend with benefits, for it is a little eye-candy, that’s even more true for the beach buggy version. Just beware that in cities with fast and heavy traffic you may feel a bit small sometimes.
