Harroun was the first Indy 500 winner with an average speed of 74.59 mph in the Marmon Wasp Special.
American Joe Dawson took the checkered flag in 1912 for the National Motor Vehicle Company in the NVM Special.
Frenchman Goux (left) won the race behind the wheel of the Peugeot Special averaging 75.93 mph.
Thomas (France) won Indy for the Louis Delage Company at the fourth running of the 500.
DePalma took the Indy win for E.C. Patterson in a Mercedes E.C. Patterson Special.
UK driver Resta, seen here at the wheel of a Sunbeam, won the 500 with an average speed of 84 mph.
The Indy 500 wasn’t held in 1917 or 1918 due to the war, American Wilcox took the checkered flag upon its return.

Milton took the crown in both ’21 and ’23, first in a Louis Chevrolet Special, then in a H.C.S Motor Company Special.
Californian Jimmy Murphy, seen here in a Durant Special, won Indy with an average speed of 90.545 mph.
Corum started the race and Boyer (pictured) finished in the #15 Duesenberg Special with an average speed of 98.234 mph.
DePaolo, riding shotgun here, won Indy for the Duesenberg team with an average speed of 101.127 mph. That was the first year the 100-mph average mark was cracked.

Schneider drove a Bowes Seal Fast Schneider Special to victory with a 96.629 mph average.
American Fred Frame drove for Harry Hartz in a Miller-Harry Hartz Special.
Cummings, middle of the first row, drove a Boyle Products Henning Special to victory in 1934.
Petillo drove a Gilmore Speedway Petillo Special to victory with an average speed of 106.240 mph.
Shaw drove an Offenhauser-powered car in his first Indy win, and a Maserati-powered Boyle Racing Headquarters Special the next two.
Roberts drove for Lou Moore in 1938 and won the 500 with an average speed of 117.200 mph.
Mauri Rose won the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway three times. His first win came in 1941 when his own car suffered mechanical failure and he took over the driving chores from Floyd Davis and went on to post the victory. He also won back-to-back Indy 500s in 1947 and 1948.
World War II stopped the race from ’42 to ’45. Robson won Indy for Thorne Engineering in 1946 behind the wheel of the Thorne Engineering Special with a speed of 114.820 mph. He was tragically killed the same year in an accident during at race at Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta, Georgia.
After Rose won the next two Indy 500s, Holland drove the Offenhauser-powered Blue Crown Spark Plug Moore Special in 1949 with an average speed of 121.327 mph (seen here in the Love Machine & Tool Offenhauser at the California State Fairgrounds).
Johnnie Parsons (in car), won in an Offy-Kurtis Kraft in ’50 with a speed of 124.002 mph. Pictured here in the Belond Equa-Flow Exhaust Special in 1953.

Troy Ruttman, seen here at USAC Indy Car race at Trenton International Speedway, drove for J.C. Agajanian in 1952, winning with an average speed of 128.992 mph.
Vukovic drove an Offy-powered Kurtis Kraft in ’53 and ’54, averaging 128 and 130 mph average speed for owner Howard B. Keck.
