Reviewing new cars for a living has been a bit hazardous to my mental health.
Juggling countless cars as a motoring journo posed a minor risk to the state of my mental health.
I was stressed out by back-to-back testing of a serious sports car with a few hundred horses and a seriously lousy jalopy with powerless ponies. I was stressed out while test-driving a fancy new car in some foreign land because I had to battle jet lag, road culture shock and driving with the steering wheel on the “wrong” side, all at the same time.
I also suffered the psychological torture of looking stupid in a silly runabout right after looking clever in a Smart, and feeling fortunate in a lovely ride just before feeling unlucky in an ugly ride.
On a more serious note, the above situations are nothing compared to clinical depression or psychosocial stressors. Good mental health is vital to everyone’s well-being, whether behind the wheel or anywhere else.
