Jeep Gladiator 3,6 Rubicon Double Cab – R1 299 900
The most recent addition to South Africa’s new bakkie market is this; the 209 kW and 347 N.m Jeep Gladiator. Taking the same recipe of the Wrangler and applying it to a bakkie, or pickup as Americans call it, it satisfies a niche market for the price tag it demands. The 3,6-litre V6 motor is paired solely to an eight-speed auto which achieves an average fuel consumption of 14,9L/100 km.

Volkswagen Amarok 3,0 V6 TDI Double Cab Extreme 4Motion – R1 096 300
Arriving at the end of its product life, the outgoing Amarok still holds not one, but two places in the most expensive bakkies list. The former is the Extreme 4Motion model that puts out 190 kW and 580 N.m from its turbo-diesel V6 motor. The German bakkie can shuffle through its eight-speed gearbox before topping out at 207 km/h, before it achieves this it can manage a 0-100 km/h time in 7,6 seconds but this speed and acceleration will likely hurt the claimed 11,4L/100 km fuel economy.

Volkswagen Amarok 3,0 V6 TDI Double Cab Highline 4Motion – R1 005 000
Similar to the above, the Highline model comes in just under R100 000 less than the Extreme model and despite the same outputs, it will only achieve the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7,94 seconds.

Ford Ranger 2,0 Bi-Turbo Double Cab 4×4 Raptor Special Edition – R999 150
Similarly to the Amarok, the outgoing Ford Ranger holds a seat as one of the most expensive bakkies available on our market. It will share a production line with the next Amarok and its high-performance successor will likely cost a fair amount more than the German rival. For now, the outgoing model at just under a million Rand comes with a turbo-diesel 4-cylinder motor that puts out a healthy 157 kW and 500 N.m while achieving a frugal 10,0L/100 km fuel economy.

Toyota Land Cruiser 79 4,5D-4D LX V8 Double Cab 70th Anniversary – R981 100
Here for very different reasons to the high-performing models that are aforementioned is the venerable Toyota Land Cruiser which has changed through few iterations over the years. Although this is price an optional extra beneath a million rand, the Double Cab 70th Anniversary is a special edition of the venerable Land Cruiser. Under the bonnet is a thirsty V8 that puts out 151 kw and 430 N.m. The five-speed manual will get the boxy model up to 160 km/h while reserved driving will return 14,3L/100 km.
