This past weekend’s Creative Rides auction that took place in Johannesburg saw 67 rare and collector cars going under the hammer, with sale prices ranging from as low as R50,000 to as high as R4.4 million.
The vehicle that swooped up the highest price was none other than a pristine 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 Vantage, one of only 72 right-hand-drive models that were ever built.
“At the R4-million mark only two bidders were still in the battle; one in Johannesburg and the other in the UK,” said Kevin Derrick, Creative Rides Auctions CEO.
“Both fought valiantly, but in the end, the English bidder’s knock-out R100,000 raise clinched the deal at R4.4 million.”
The hybrid live and online event drew over three million viewers from 93 countries, with 100 registered bidders taking part, said Derrick.
Auction highlights
The Aston wasn’t alone in securing bidders’ attention, as two other highly-collectible vehicles were caught selling for far above R1 million.
This included a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster that fetched R1.9 million, as well as a 1971 BMW 3.0L CSI E9 which managed to get R1.275 million.
Additionally, the South African-exclusive 1991 BMW E30 325iS EVO2, known colloquially as the Gusheshe, was one of the most hotly-contested lots of the day and saw the hammer falling at R900,000.
Only 500 examples of the Gusheshe were produced each one destined for local soil, and fortunately, the coupe will remain within our borders and will continue to live out its life at its new home in KwaZulu-Natal.
While the big lots drew the most eyes, the Creative Rides auction had something for everyone, said Derrick.
Several cars aimed at “novice collectors” were sold off for under R100,000, the cheapest one going for R50,000.
“A fair number also carried auction estimates of less than R300,000, which is approaching the average price of smaller new cars in South Africa,” he said.
Creative Rides’ next auction will take place in March 2023 in Cape Town, with the full catalogue to be revealed closer to the time.
