Herta extends with Andretti through 2027

Andretti Autosport has announced an extension with its star IndyCar driver Colton Herta through the 2027 racing season.

The 22-year-old already had a seat secured for next season, but this new, exceptionally-long extension ensures that he will not be driving for another team any time soon.

Despite having a self-described ‘miserable’ season in 2022 which saw him finish 10th in the championship, Herta will work to improve his results at the same team where he has raced since 2020.

Along with the announcement was the news that Gainbridge will stay on as his main sponsor through at least next season, keeping him in the iconic black and yellow livery.

“We’re really pleased to confirm that Colton and Gainbridge will remain with Andretti Autosport for years to come,” said Andretti Autosport CEO Michael Andretti. “Colton is a true talent in a race car and has natural determination that makes him want to win.

“He’s a strong competitor and a good teammate. I’m looking forward to seeing what Colton and Andretti can continue to achieve together.

“We’ve been really proud to represent Gainbridge, and to have given them their first racing victory with Colton in 2020 — and four more since.  On and off the track we share a commitment to compete at the top level and look forward to seeing Colton return to victory lane in the yellow and black Gainbridge colors.”

There was intense speculation over the summer that Herta would make the jump to Formula 1 starting next season, but a rejected request to exempt him from the Super License requirements put an quick end to that bid.

It is presumed that a path to F1 still exists if he can earn enough points in the upcoming IndyCar seasons, especially if Michael Andretti is successful in his bid to form his own team in the world-travelling series and bring his talented driver over with him.

Fellow IndyCar drivers Pato O’Ward and Alex Palou have recently been given practice outings with McLaren, however, at least momentarily overlooking the Californian until he has a viable chance at being allowed to race in F1.

“I’m super happy and grateful for everything the entire Andretti and Gainbridge teams have done for me,” said Herta in the annoucement. “This is a huge step for me professionally and I’m so glad it can be with a top team like Andretti Autosport.

“We have big goals and a lot of work ahead of us, but I can’t be happier to do it with this team and represent Gainbridge!”
