The latest from the German tuner.
The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class is near the peak of extravagance, opulence, and capability when it comes to factory-built off-road vehicles. Which means that when you let aftermarket customizers like Brabus at it, you can end up with an absolute monster. Like the 800 hp Brabus 800 Widestar.
Brabus is famous for taking existing, perfectly quick and luxurious Mercedes-Benz products, and turning them into something astonishing. More of everything. More power, more luxury, more more. The latest from the German tuner is this. The G 63-based Brabus 800 Widestar.
It starts with the new G’s twin-turbo V8. The engine gets boosted from 577 hp all the way to 789 hp. With 737 lb-ft of torque to go with it. The extra power comes thanks to a new set of bigger turbochargers as well as revised ECU tuning. To make sure that everyone in your postal code can hear that extra power, the uberwagen comes with a stainless steel sports exhaust. It has twin tailpipes coming out on each side in front of the rear wheels. There’s also an active exhaust valve in it that lets the driver pick between what Brabus calls a “subtle ‘Coming Home’” and full-on loud.
The Widestar part of the name comes from those massively flared wheel arches. The company has added 10 cm to the G’s width. Along with that come LED-lit running boards spanning the gap between the arches. To help fill the wheel space, Brabus offers 23-inch Monoblock alloys wearing 305-wide tires. Which might cut into the off-road capability just a touch. We’re sure owners won’t mind.
After that exterior, Brabus isn’t leaving the interior of this G untouched. Inside, the company is offering a highly customizable space. The Brabus “fine leather” (really, that’s what they call it) all-leather interior is diamond-quilted on the seats and comes with black piping to highlight the brown hide. But the trim inlays are available in a wide range of wood and carbon finishes. There are other small changes too. Things like a new limiting strap for the rear doors that lets them open just a bit wider for ease of access. And Brabus-logo pulls for the door locks.
The Brabus G will let you see the night sky as well. A black Alcantara headliner gets a Rolls-like starry sky fiber-optic lit starscape. Aluminum shift paddles let you control that V8 as it rockets the Widestar to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. Fortunately, given the aero and original intent of the G, the top speed is limited to 240 km/h.
Brabus hasn’t said what this G thang will cost, but it’s probably not a concern for anyone looking at buying one.
