Yamaha seems to have been working quietly on upgrading its flagship superbike, the Yamaha YZF-R1. The new bike is expected to be comprehensively updated for 2023. According to recent documents filed by FIM (federation international de motocyclisme), the International Motorcycling Federation, Yamaha submitted details of a new and updated 2023 model of the Yamaha YZF1000W. FIM’s documents only list competition models, so the motorcycle listed in the documents is expected to be a track-only machine. But the more pertinent point is that a road-legal version of the 2023 Yamaha R1 may also follow.
The current generation Yamaha YZF-R1 was introduced in 2015 and got an update in 2020 for international markets to help meet the latest emission regulations (Euro 5). In fact, by 2023, the current generation R1 will be practically eight years old, so it seems to be the only logical move to update the road-legal R1. The documents show the R1 with still a 998 cc, inline-four engine, although it’s early days yet to guess if Yamaha will update the engine to make it more powerful than the current 199 bhp to make it more in line, at least in power output terms to superbikes in the same segment with 200+ bhp.
The updated litre-class in-line engine is expected to make in excess of 200 bhp of power on the new R1
The Japanese brand first launched its high-performance motorcycle in 1998 and it was even imported to India. The bike came with an inline four-cylinder 998 cc liquid-cooled, DOHC engine which produced 150 Bhp and 98 Nm of torque. The R1 went thru significant updates in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2015. The latest model YZF-R1 2015 was a 998cc, liquid-cooled, 16 valve, DOHC, in-line four-cylinder engine which produces 199bhp and 106 Nm torque.
Later, discontinued in India after the implementation of the new BS6 emission norms on April 1, 2020. After this the company had revealed that it is not planning to launch any high-performance bikes in India anytime soon.
