For the first time since the pandemic began, CES is back in full—okay, mostly full—force in Las Vegas this January. In-person attendance for the event formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show isn’t the only thing to look forward to, as there are plenty of automotive debuts and breakthroughs to expect beyond the typical new TV, smartphone, and software tech when the event opens January 5.
While a few high-profile companies have pulled out of the show in recent weeks over concerns that a new surge is hitting America—including Meta (Facebook), Twitter, and a few others—the 2022 CES has yet to be officially canceled or shifted to a virtual space. So, provided the show does go on, here’s what to look forward to in the automotive space:
2023 Chevrolet Silverado EV
Chevrolet has already begun previewing its all-electric Silverado pickup truck, teasing the rig’s huge 24-inch wheels, its four-wheel steering, and all-glass roof. We don’t yet know which of these features will be standard or optional, but we do know the truck will share its Ultium platform with the 2022 GMC Hummer EV and the forthcoming 2024 GMC Sierra EV. The new electric Silverado debuts January 5, so stay tuned for more.
2023 BMW iX M60
BMW is rolling out its new iX EV SUV (pictured here), and if you would have guessed a higher-performance M-badged model was coming, you’d be correct. At CES this year, BMW will unveil the iX M60, a sportier version of the regular iX, which comes in xDrive40 and xDrive50 guises. Likely a member of BMW’s in-between performance range that’s already spawned the electric i4 M50 sedan, the iX M60 won’t be a full-blown M car like the M3 or M5, though it is tuned by M.
BMW Electric Body Color Changing Tech
So far, all we know is that this breakthrough enables one to change the color of their car at the press of a button. BMW is promising more details at the show, and we’re quite interested in finding those out.
Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX
On Monday, January 3, Mercedes-Benz will be virtually unveiled ahead of an appearance at CES in the metal January 5-8. Apparently a showcase for advanced software that behind a “barrage of intelligent efficiency measures,” the “Vision EQXX allows Mercedes-Benz to explore new frontiers of efficiency.” We think any concept vehicle debut that includes a barrage of anything sounds fascinating, so we’ll see what this tapered four-door Mercedes show car has in store.
