Acclaimed Thai film director ML Pundhevanop Dhewakul died of lung cancer on Thursday night. He was 69 years old.
He was best known for two movies, “Fah Din Salai” (Eternity) in 2010 and U-mong Phamuang (The Outrage) in 2011, which was based on the classic Kurosawa film “Rashomon”.
Mom Noi, as he was better known, had been receiving treatment at Bangkok Christian Hospital for almost two months.
The filmmaker did not attend the premiere of his latest work “Six Characters” (2022, based on Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello) on Wednesday.
Chaiyapol Julien Poupart, who layed one of the lead characters, told reporters then that Mom Noi missed he premiere for health reasons.
Mom Noi was born on March 16, 1953, to MR Chananwat Dhewakul and Bhakdi Dhewakul na Ayutthaya.
Other well-known films directed by Mom Noi include two “Jan Dara” films (2012 and 2013), “Plae Kao” (The Scar, 2014) and “Mae Bia” (2015, based on the novel by SEAWrite laureate Vanich Charungkitanan)
He also taught acting – at Mahidol and Chulalongkorn universities and other institutions.
