Wales’ first electric and hydrogen charging facility is set to be created in Swansea as part of the £1.7 billion Blue Eden renewable energy project, Swansea City council has announced.
The Blue Eden project is a privately funded development which is set to include the largest floating solar panel facility in the UK, a battery facility to store the renewable energy generated on site and a manufacturing plant to make the batteries.
Tthe facility is to be be sited along an extensive area of land and water to the south of the Prince of Wales Dock in the SA1 area of Swansea.
Discussions between DST Innovations and other landowners in the area are on-going.
Subject to planning consent, site development could start in 2023.
Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said:
“There have been previous tidal lagoon proposals in recent years but what’s now being proposed for Blue Eden is a much-improved scheme because of the many additional elements it will also deliver.
“The renewable energy transport hub is an exciting addition. With more and more electric cars on the road nowadays – and the move towards vehicles powered by hydrogen gathering pace too – facilities will be needed to charge these vehicles in the coming years.”
