French President Emmanuel Macron had the opportunity of sampling the best local automotive luxury of his country after being ferried around in the new DS 7 ÉLYSÉE to celebrate Bastille Day for the Republic.

Citroëns premium DS brand took centre stage on the country’s 14th of July (14 Juillet) celebrations which commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on the same day in 1789. The violent attack on the government by the people of feudalist state signalling the start of the French Revolution and abolished the political structure of absolute monarchy.

While monarchical opulence and ostentation were a factor in the disgruntled peasant population which influenced the historic revolution, the new DS 7 ÉLYSÉE is far more understated in its luxury. Despite a society that has more equality than ever before, the model with its lengthened chassis has been fully equipped to protect the Presidential entourage with built-in armour plating.

This isn’t the first time French politicians have called on the DS nameplate to be ferried around in comfort and style. Prior to DS becoming its own sub-division of Citroën, Charles de Gaulle famously survived an assasination attempt when he and his wife were trundling along in a timelessly beautiful Citroën DS when militants opened fire on the motorcade in Paris on the 22nd of August 1962.

The attractive SUV debuted recently and this is one of its first major outings with high ranking officials but we can’t imagine this will be its last. Citroën SA and Stellantis have still not confirmed if the luxury marque will join their portfolio in Mzanzi but we remain hopeful!
