While 2023 is the year of the next-gen VW Tiguan, 2024 will be the year a new VW ID.4 breaks cover, as per a report German magazine Auto Bild published in its issue on March 1, 2023. First details about the VW ID.4 facelift have started surfacing well ahead of the scheduled world premiere in 2024.
Design
Introduced in September 2020, the VW ID.4 still looks new thanks to its futuristic, offbeat design. Volkswagen has planned a timely facelift to maintain its freshness given the influx of new electric SUVs in the next couple of years. We expect the 2024 VW ID.4 to be bolder with more aggression in the lights and sharper bumpers. Obviously, there’ll be a bank of updated alloy wheel options, available in four different sizes – 18, 19, 20, and 21 inches.
Interior
Inside, the 2024 VW ID.4 should feature a new 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system. In addition to offering better readability and easier access than the outgoing model’s 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the 15-inch unit should have smoother and snappier functioning.

Another big upgrade in the new VW ID.4 will likely be a smart climate control system that automatically sets the temperature in different zones based on the sun’s position. A sensor in the windscreen would detect the incident angle of the sunlight and based on the information obtained from this sensor, the air conditioner would cool the warmer zones first. The new system may allow saving personal settings as well, which would be practical for customers who share their EVs with multiple drivers.
Volkswagen will likely offer illuminated touch sliders for the climate control system in the new ID.4. The backlit touch sliders should be located at the bottom of the new 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Another convenience improvement in the new ID.4 will likely be the usage of push buttons instead of touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. In October 2022, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer said in a post on LinkedIn that the company is bringing back push-button controls on the steering wheel.
Specifications
The 2024 VW ID.4 should release in a mix of current and new configurations. Some of the new configurations should have an 86 kWh battery pack that offers a higher range than the outgoing model’s 77 kWh unit 275 miles (U.S. EPA)/331 miles (Germany WLTP), probably around 300 miles (U.S. EPA)/350 miles (Germany WLTP).

In addition to increased range, the new ID.4 should have performance improvements. Select configurations may sport the new APP550 (“MEB Performance”) motor that can produce up to 210 kW (282 hp) of power and up to 550 Nm (406 lb.-ft.) of torque. The present GTX variant, even with two motors, makes just 220 kW (295 hp) and 460 Nm (339 lb.-ft.) of torque. We’re pretty excited about Volkswagen’s future dual-motor powertrains, as they are a step up from what is offered today, and can give the vehicle a whole new personality.
According to the Auto Bild report, Volkswagen will replace the ID.4 GTX with an R-Line variant with the facelift. The VW ID.4 R-Line will sport a more capable powertrain that generates 250 kW (335 hp). It should accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) 1.8 seconds quicker, in just 4.5 seconds, as per the report. If realized, that would be a significant improvement in the performance aspect.
Release date
It’s too early to predict an exact launch timeline for the VW ID.4 facelift, since road testing hasn’t even begun. It is likely that we will see the new model in U.S. dealerships by mid-2024. Prices should start at around USD 40,000, with the American-spec cars made in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
TopElectricSUV says
The ID.4, Volkswagen’s best-selling EV worldwide, should become a more practical and compact SUV with the refresh. The 2024 VW ID.4 may not look all that different, but upgrades in convenience, performance, efficiency, and range, will make it a more appealing product, and address the feedback from early adopters.
