The new GWM Tank 300 is on its way to South Africa and is expected to retail from a starting price of R685,900 and go up to R851,900, confirmed Conrad Groenewald, Chief Operations Officer of Haval Motors South Africa.
The automaker has yet to reveal the 300’s official launch date, but did say that it will be the first model in the new Tank range with the larger Tank 500 “likely to follow early next year.”
The new “Off-Road Vehicle (ORV)” will be on display to visitors this upcoming week at Nampo Harvest Day from 16-19 May in Bothaville, Free State, alongside its siblings the new Ora Cat – the cheapest electric car in the country – and limited-edition P-Series double cab.
What to expect
The new Tank 300 is coming to the market with two powertrain options.
The first takes the shape of a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine generating 162kW and 387Nm, combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This model makes do with a part-time four-wheel-drive setup with 2H, 4H, and 4L settings.
The second is a hybrid configuration similar to the one in the H6 HEV that generates up to 258kW and 615Nm and connects to a nine-speed auto-box with full-time 4WD.
The Tank further sits on a ladder-frame chassis, similar to the P-Series, “and this gives it serious offroad credentials,” said Groenewald.
To that end, the high-rider boasts a 224mm ground clearance as well as an approach angle of 33 degrees and a departure angle of 34 degrees.
“We believe both business and leisure buyers will be impressed with what they see,” said Groenewald.
With the Tank’s launch date still an undisclosed amount of time away, GWM has yet to announce its specifications nor the complete line-up.
In Australia, the SUV sports features such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, a nine-speaker sound system, an electric driver seat, ambient lighting, automatic LED lights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The official South African pricing and specifications for the upcoming Tank 300 are expected to be announced either at Nampo, or when the SUV goes on sale later this year.
