The Speirling Pure carries a price tag of over $1 million, but it's a seriously capable track weapon.
McMurtry Automotive, the company behind the incredible Speirling electric track car, has revealed an even more hardcore derivative known as the Speirling Pure.
Thanks to a series of revisions, the latest iteration is more capable than ever before. But before we get into any of the changes, let's take a look at some of the eye-widening statistics. As you can see, the Speirling Pure is incredibly small. It's just 135.8 inches long and weighs less than 2,204 pounds, which is remarkable.
Even with modest outputs, the Speirling Pure should be able to rocket away from anything else on the road. But this all-electric track monster has a whopping 1,000 horsepower at its disposal (all of which is sent to the rear wheels), allowing it to hit a top speed of 190 mph. The previous model was capable of hitting 60 mph in just 1.5 seconds, making it quicker than even a Rimac Nevera.
But the Speirling is about so much more than straight-line speed. Even though it can do 190 mph, McMurtry created it to fly around challenging race courses with gusto. The little electric racer holds the world record for the fastest-ever time at Goodwood Hill.
This monstrous performance is achieved in several ways, such as the unique fan downforce system, which delivers constant downforce all the time and at any speed. McMurtry claims the Speirling Pure can achieve cornering forces as high as 3g – something you'd expect from an F1 car.
The slippery shape also plays a crucial part when it comes to aerodynamics. McMurtry says the frontal area has been made as small as possible by making the driver “both the lowest and tallest point in the car.” Instead of sitting under the floor, company engineers have positioned the batteries between the wheels ( and under the driver's legs) in a unique U-shape.
So let's look at the changes made to the Pure variant. For a start, the fan system has been dramatically improved. Not only is it 15% more efficient than before, but it's also 14% lighter and has been reconfigured to deal with variations in flow. The chassis has also been tweaked for a 4% weight saving, while a new battery pack (with superior thermal management) has been fitted. Remarkably, even this is lighter.
McMurtry has put the Speirling Pure on a crash diet; even the wiring loom for the electrical architecture is 35% lighter than before. Other reductions include the power steering unit (20% saving), a redesigned pedal box (17% saving), brake system assembly (2.5%), and chassis (4%).
While this is all very important, the company hasn't skimped out in other areas. Drivers will be pleased to know that ABS is now available, while the tires have increased in width, providing more traction.
The front and rear are now sized at 27/65 and 30/68, respectively. The company has also gone for smaller 18-inch wheels, resulting in additional weight savings. Lastly, the suspension and bodywork have also been revised, all in the pursuit of shaving milliseconds off your lap times.
Co-developed with Molicel, McMurtry says the 60 kWh battery will provide the Speirling Pure with enough juice for ten laps around Silverstone at breakneck speeds. When you're close to depleting the battery, the company claims it needs less than 20 minutes plugged into a fast charger, and it will be ready to set the tarmac alight once more.
“The Speirling Pure will herald a new era on the track. The sound, grip, acceleration, aesthetics, and technology of this car are distinct. Witnessing the car as a spectator or from the cockpit offers a rare and exhilarating experience. With pre-orders from around the globe, I can't wait for fan cars at the racetrack to become a new normality,” said company founder Thomas Yates.
If you want to get your hands on one, you may have to wait a bit. McMurtry says pre-production prototypes will arrive next year, with deliveries expected to start in 2025. You may want to start saving now, though, as the little Speirling Pure carries a massive price tag: £820,000 (approx. $1,043,000), to be exact, and that doesn't include taxes.
Just 100 examples will be produced, ensuring its exclusivity.
For those who can afford it, the Speirling Pure will be unlike anything else at any track event you partake in. What's more, it's eligible for the GT1 Sports Club, meaning owners can compete in this exclusive hypercar event, which takes place at various circuits worldwide.
If you want an up-close look, the Validation Prototype will be displayed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month. Perhaps it will make history again and shatter its current record.
