F1's behind-the-scenes docuseries is back for another season.
The Netflix docuseries Formula 1: Drive to Survive will be back on your screens for season five even earlier this year than it was last, as Netflix has confirmed the series will be available to stream on February 24, 2023. The announcement was accompanied by a short teaser trailer, which you can watch below.
While the 2022 F1 season was nowhere near as controversial as 2021's, the first major overhaul of F1 car design in decades and the issues faced – like the ground effect aero porpoising and news of Red Bull Racing exceeding the cost cap – are bound to make the fifth season of the hit Netflix show extra exciting.
Drive to Survive came under fire in 2022 by Formula 1 teams, drivers, and executives, as it sensationalized the sport to the point of tabloidism in season four, pitting drivers against one another who in reality had nothing but respect for each other. It painted a poor picture of the dynamic between drivers like Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren, and led to widespread calls for an improvement in the way the producers handled the show. F1 bosses even said they might sell the rights to another broadcaster, although the series was confirmed for a fifth and sixth season.
We won't spoil the trailer for you, but the next season looks like it'll be epic, and two-time champion Max Verstappen makes a return to the series after abstaining from season four after taking exception with the light in which the drivers were cast.
Netflix Formula 1
This year, the Netflix show will be broadcast earlier than before. Last year, Drive to Survive season four aired the weekend of pre-season testing in early March, and this year, the February 24 date coincides once again with the pre-season tests at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain.
The 2023 F1 season will be starting earlier as it will be the busiest season to date, with 24 rounds, including six sprint races and three on US soil, including a new one to be held in Las Vegas.
With new teams, including Andretti Cadillac, looking to join in the next few years and Audi joining the grid in 2026, F1 is becoming more exciting than ever before. And, of course, we'll likely see the controversy over which F1 safety car is quicker, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series or the Aston Martin Vantage. Brad Pitt will even be in the paddock on F1 race weekends filming a new movie.
