The film looks like it'll be as immersive and exciting as the game, if not more so.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has just released the first look at the upcoming Gran Turismo film, and it has us feeling that August 2023 cannot arrive soon enough.
The sneak peek posted below gives us a look at some of the in-film footage but also reveals how some of the scenes were shot. This shows that the cinematography will endeavor to replicate some of the view angles you see when playing the Gran Turismo game, but there will also be shots from the driver's perspective and other in-car shots.
This game-based film appears to make all that came before look even less impressive. Need for Speed, we're looking at you.
A cult favorite of the Sony gaming franchise, the Nissan GT-R will be present, as will a track version of the Lamborghini Huracan and Stuttgart's World Endurance Championship contender, the Porsche 963 hypercar. The Ford GT and numerous other supercars will ensure enough variety to keep any car fan intrigued, while the inclusion of Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner's wife, Geri, lends further legitimacy to the concept.
YouTube sensation and Corvette fanatic Emelia Hartford will also be a cast member alongside Hollywood stars Orlando Bloom and David Harbour, the latter of which will play protagonist Jann Mardenborough's coach. Jann's role will be filled by Archie Madekwe.
Filming commenced in November last year, and it appears that progress is being made swiftly, as the film is due to be released in August this year. Despite this demanding production schedule, we can expect the movie to stay true to its inspiration, with the creator of the Gran Turismo gaming series, Kazunori Yamauchi, serving as executive director.
In case you missed the premise of this film, it will be based on the meteoric rise to stardom of former Gran Turismo gamer Jann Mardenborough, whose skill on the virtual racetrack led to him graduating from the Nissan GT Academy to become a bona fide pro racing driver.
If that's not the kind of story a gearhead can enjoy, we don't know what is.
