Alfa Romeo is developing a new limited-run flagship supercar to be unveiled ahead of the Italian Grand Prix
Alfa Romeo might be looking ahead to a new era of electric cars, but this won't stop it from celebrating the combustion engine one last time with a limited-edition mid-engined supercar based on the Maserati MC20. Set to debut on August 30 during the lead up to the Italian Grand Prix, Alfa's new hero car will act as a bridge between the firm's ICE models and its future electric sports cars.
Alfa is no stranger to the low-volume halo sports car, often drawing from the technical toolbox of its sister companies to produce stunning creations such as the 8C Competizione (based on the Maserati GranTurismo). This new halo model is said to be inspired by the Alfa Romeo's 1960's iconic Tipo 33 Stradale. Its powertrain will include a further development of the turbo-charged Nettuno V6 engine from the current evo Car of the Year, Maserati's MC20.
Alfa Romeo chief executive officer Jean-Phillipe Imparato confirmed the limited run model's powertrain in 2022, announcing the anniversary model will mirror the Maserati supercar by accommodating its petrol motor and adapting its Dallara designed and built carbonfibre chassis, yet despite the MC20's chassis designed to take both an IC engine and an electric powertrain the Alfa Romeo will only be petrol powered.
In terms of design Alfa Romeo will draw inspiration from its iconic racers of the ‘60s and ‘70s for its limited-run supercar, with organic curves and a triangular grille motif. Alfa Romeo has form when it comes to retro-themed sports cars, with the beautiful but flawed 4C reinterpreting the 33 Stradale's styling into a modern aesthetic.
A bespoke and strictly limited interpretation of what the MC20 offers, this last petrol-powered, ultra-limited edition Alfa Romeo supercar is expected to carry a seven-figure price figure.
