HyperFest 2023 was crazy, but no one was expecting this.
HyperFest at the Virginia International Raceway has always been a showcase of everything great about the car culture. Dubbed the “automotive amusement park,” it combines live music, extreme sports, and various automotive spectacles.
One such spectacle was a drifting exhibition featuring a boat and professional drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. piloting his 1,300-HP Ford Mustang RTR Formula Drift car.
During the event, Gittin immersed himself in the entire experience, even joining an off-roading crew at night. He delighted the crowd with his drifting prowess, pushing his Mustang to its limits on the track. However, a moment around the 11-minute and 40-second mark of the video below truly astonished him.
Amid the collection of drivers' cars, he stumbled upon a seemingly abandoned boat hitched to a trailer in the middle of nowhere. It turned out to be a fully modified performance drift car that looks worthy of entering the 24 Hours of LeMons.
The sight left Gittin dumbfounded; he could hardly believe his eyes. Before him, stood a 2001 BMW 330ci, stripped of its original body panels and replaced with a 1968 Johnson Surfer 2 body. The owner, Brandon Tothero, proudly revealed that the unconventional vehicle was street-legal, and equipped with functional lights and turn signals.

Astonishingly, Brandon and his creation, nicknamed “Jenny,” has yet to attract unwanted attention from law enforcement.
“Not yet,” that is – as if Brandon himself was expecting that to happen anytime soon.
It wasn't just there for the shock factor. It was a real drift machine and can take on the best of them. With pleasantries exchanged, Vaughn and Brandon engaged in an epic drift-off, pitting Gittin's monstrous Ford Mustang drift car against the boat-turned-drift car on the renowned Virginia International Raceway.
