Volkswagen has taken the wraps of a new-look Atlas dubbed the Atlas Peak Edition based on the popular Basecamp Concept that debuted back in 2019. Announced at the 2023 New York Auto Show, the new trim gives the Atlas a more rugged look to go with the vehicle's updated styling, boasting some unique features inside and out.
VW updated the Atlas and Atlas Cross for the 2024 model year, and this new Peak Edition that adds body cladding, a new set of wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, black exterior trim details, and a fresh interior design, aims to keep the focus on the big SUV.
A new look face has a pair of chrome strips in the grille, silver underbody cladding, with the 'X' design you might recognize from the Atlas Cross Sport stretched along the bottom.
Down the side, you're greeted by the new Peak Edition logo in orange and chrome. The new 18-inch wheels are blacked out and framed in black wheel arches, complemented by black and silver side sills, and a selection of blacked-out elements including the roof rails, side mirrors and window surround. At the rear, a new black and silver diffuser sits with chrome exhaust bezels, topped by a black tailgate strip.
The Atlas Peak Edition introduces two new colors to the Atlas palate, Avocado Green and Pure Grey, both of which are exclusive to the trim.
A new look cabin features black leatherette with grey inserts and orange stitching to match the peak Edition logo colors. A black metallic check pattern is unique to the trim with 'Peak Edition' featured on a steering wheel clip and on a cool illuminated pattern on the dash that lights up in one of 30 different ambient colors available with the Atlas.
No pricing has been released for the model, but since it's little more than a cosmetic package, we don't imagine it will be that much more on top of the Atlas' price which should start around $38,000 for 2024.
If these updates seem familiar, that's because VW offered a new line of accessories for the Atlas in 2020 inspired by the Basecamp Concept produced by AirDesign. The new Peak Edition trim doesn't go quite that far but does offer buyers wanting a tougher-looking model a decent alternative.
