General Motors' luxury brand has just taken the wraps off three new or redesigned vehicles, and one of them is the new GT4, described as “the first new American luxury coupe SUV.” Those words seem out of place until you realize that this is a car for the Chinese market, where Cadillac is finding remarkable success. Aimed at younger buyers and “especially female customers,” the GT4 is not gruffly styled and makes no pretenses about off-road ability.
It just looks good, provides the tech you really need, and comes with a respected badge. We're not saying that it would fill any gaping holes in the American market – the upcoming Escalade IQ will answer that calling – but it certainly ticks plenty of boxes.
Slotting in somewhere between the XT4 and XT6 in terms of length, the GT4 arrives with styling that makes it difficult to differentiate from other Caddys but still looks modern and clean. Vertical LED running lights fill the outer edges of the front bumper, where headlights are hidden above a pair of faux grilles. More slim LED elements flank the sizeable central grille, while the rear brings familiar styling to the lighting elements. A subtle spoiler, a fake diffuser, and a quartet of exhaust pipes hint at high performance, but those are red herrings.
Under the hood, buyers can either have a 1.5-liter turbo-four or a 2.0-liter turbo, both arriving with mild-hybrid technology. The first generates 208 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels, while the second makes 233 hp and 258 lb-ft.
The base engine is good for 0-62 mph in 8.9 seconds, while the 2.0-liter option drops that to 7.8. In its defense, the GT4 is only working with a nine-speed automatic.
At least you get a five-link independent rear suspension with either engine, so it's not all bad news. An AWD system can be had as an option, but we'd forgo that weight penalty for better fuel economy and performance.
This is a car designed to look good and feel good to the average young luxury shopper, so buyers can choose from five exterior colors and up to six dual-color combos for the cabin, while a multicolor ambient lighting system makes the cabin feel fresh throughout the ownership period.
Other features include a 15-speaker AKG sound system (only four speakers fewer than you get in a base Escalade), a full-color head-up display, a 360-degree camera system, and haptic vibration seats. Front-row seat heating and ventilation, wireless entry, a power tailgate, and Apple Wireless charging are also worth a mention, as are self-healing tires.
Pricing is from RMB 219,700 to RMB 309,700 ($31,060 to $43,785).
