It's the brand's fastest model to date.
Polestar has unveiled its latest model, the 2024 Polestar 4 SUV Coupe, the all-electric premium brand's second SUV. Within the Swedish carmaker's lineup, the Polestar 4 occupies the space and pricing middle ground between the 2 sedan and 3 SUV. This fully electrified compact crossover looks equally luxurious and minimalistic inside and out. Oh, and did we mention this thing has up to 544 horsepower on tap and 506 lb-ft of blazing-fast instant torque available? Well, we just did. More on that shortly.
Riding on the premium Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) developed by parent company Geely, the 4 has a 118-inch wheelbase, an overall length of 190 inches, an 84-inch width, and a 60-inch height. Put into perspective, the three-row Kia Telluride's wheelbase measures 114.2 inches, so the Polestar 4 has a lot of interior volume. One BEV benefit is that the wheels can be stretched further to all four corners because the large battery pack rests in the middle, resulting in generous interior space.
The Polestar 4 will be offered with a choice of single- or dual-motor layouts. If you opt for the long-range, dual-motor version, you'll be treated to that 544 hp and 506 lb-ft. You'll also be going from 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds. It's the fastest Polestar to date.
The rear-wheel-drive, single-motor, long-range setup delivers a still very respectable 272 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque. The carmaker says that the former version has a preliminary range target in excess of 300 miles based on the US government’s EPA testing procedure. Both long-range versions come with the same 102-kWh battery with 200-kilowatt DC and 22-kW AC charging, and the charge lid is motorized. It also comes with bi-directional charging with vehicle-to-load capability. A heat pump is also standard fare, so the vehicle can make use of ambient heat when preconditioning the cabin and battery.
What’s new is a drive optimization function for the dual-motor version that allows drivers to select between range and performance driving modes. Efficiency mode, in case you haven’t guessed, prioritizes efficiency by activating only the rear motor.
Performance mode, Polestar says, “sharpens up responsiveness from the powertrain and engages both motors at all times for full power delivery and best performance.” What’s also neat about the dual-motor Polestar 4 version is the semi-active suspension.
Wheels range in size from 20 to 22 inches and are wrapped in rubber supplied by Pirelli and Michelin. Efficient driving is the name of the game here, so the 4 has a low nose, retractable door handles, and frameless windows. And your eyes aren’t fooling you; there is no rear glass. Instead, the standard glass roof extends behind the rear-seat passenger headrests.
Like its corporate sister brand Volvo, Polestar places a huge emphasis on safety. There are nine airbags 12 cameras, one radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, all of which come standard. Drivers receive relevant information like speed and battery status from a 10.2-inch display located ahead of the steering column, and a 14.7-inch head-up display is optional to help reduce distractions. A “snow mode” function for the HUD is also pretty cool because it switches the text color from white to yellow for improved visibility in snowy conditions.
Drivers and front seat occupants will enjoy the 15.4-inch landscape-oriented display screen with Google built-in, which includes Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play. Apple CarPlay is also standard. Optional is a Harmon Kardon audio system with 12 speakers and a 1,400-Watt channel-hybrid amplifier.
Customers who opt for the Nappa Pack get 16 speakers. Speaking of which, there are a few upgrade packages available. The Plus Pack tacks on comfort and technology upgrades, and the Plus Pro Pack contributes color-coded body accents, an electrochromic glass roof, and additional interior illumination. The Nappa Pack, which can be selected in addition to the Plus Pack, has Nappa leather upholstery massaging seats and Nappa leather upholstery with ventilation, and additional headrest speakers for the front seats.
What particularly draws our attention is the Performance Pack for the long-range, dual-motor version only. How so? 22-inch wheels, 4-piston Brembo brakes, a Polestar Engineered chassis tuning, and gold details for the brakes, seat belts, and valve caps are all included. The Polestar 4 will enter series production this November in China and will go on sale there first.
North American market details will be announced in 2024, and will arrive on these shores the same year. Polestar provided an indicative starting pricing of $60,000. We’ll hopefully more details soon regarding final pricing and an order start date.
