These coupes demonstrate the potential of one-off Maseratis that customers could soon be able to purchase for themselves.
All eyes were on the new Maserati GranTurismo in Milan last night, where the Italian carmaker showcased a trio of one-off “masterpieces” and introduced the GranTurismo Launch Edition PrimaSerie 75th Anniversary at its new retail store.
The new GranTurismo was revealed last year with a choice between twin-turbo V6 and fully electric powertrains, but what's most admirable about it are the classic GT proportions with a healthy dose of Italian flair.
The three one-off editions were previewed earlier in April, but now we have an uninterrupted look at their uniqueness. To add even more gravitas to the event, Maserati assembled a group of high-profile attendees including David Beckham, its recently appointed global brand ambassador.
The three exclusive models are officially known as the GranTurismo One Off Prisma, GranTurismo One Off Luce, and GranTurismo One Off Ouroboros.
Inspired By The Past: GranTurismo One-Off Prisma
The Prisma is the only one of the three not based on the electric GranTurismo Folgore, and comes with the Nettuno V6 instead. Its hand-painted body is finished in 14 different colors, and if that's not intricate enough, there are over 8,500 hand-painted and hand-varnished letters that form the names of older models, including Maserati classics like the Mistral. 12 of the 14 colors recall models from the past such as the Amaranto hue found on the 1947 Maserati A6 1.500.
“GranTurismo Prisma is an ode to our 75-year heritage and to the know-how that has imbued all the cars Maserati has made over time,” said Klaus Busse, Maserati's design boss. “Prisma expresses all the beauty and excellence of the Italian craftsmanship, as well as mastery in painting and color.”
Reflecting The Future: GranTurismo One-Off Luce
A completely different finish has been conceptualized for the One Off Luce. Its reflective chromatic mirrored finish with a dynamic laser-etched pattern is what the chrome-wrapped Lexus LFA should have been.
Maserati says that the Luce's finish allows the contours of the car to blend in with its surroundings, and with its silent electric powertrain, it's the GranTurismo that will probably do the best job of sneaking up on you.
The Luce has a futuristic interior with Econyl, a regenerated nylon yarn. Finished in a monochromatic blue, the cabin's color echoes the sea where the material was sourced from. On the seats and dash, there are graphics that emulate the laser-etched detailing found on the exterior.
Busse said that the Luce signifies the brand's future and “reveals all the technology developed with Folgore, combining our forward-thinking attitude and Italian creativity.”
Past And Future Collide: GranTurismo One-Off Ouroboros
If the Prisma looks to the past and the Luce is a reflection of the future, the virtual GranTurismo One Off Ouroboros is a combination of the two in concept. 'Ouroboros' is said to be a gnostic symbol that represents “the unity of all things which never disappear but perpetually change form in an eternal cycle of destruction and recreation.”
Street culture innovator Hiroshi Fujiwara turned to Maseratis from the past in the creation of this one-off model, with the front grille inspired by the A6GCS Berlinetta Pininfarina. Another icon from the 1950s, the 3500 GT, is echoed in the design of the side vents, while the Tipo 151 is one of the cars to inspire the rounded headlights.
The Ouroboros' hodgepodge of design elements from a bygone era continues with the forged wheels that stem from the Bora from the 1970s, and the connected taillight fascia recalls the Shamal that appeared in the 1980s. Somehow, the combination of these influences has created a stunning GranTurismo with a distinct retro appeal, and of the three one-offs, this one diverges most from the production GranTurismo.
“GranTurismo Ouroboros has been conceived as a visual and cultural link between the various eras of Maserati design and the current GranTurismo generation,” said Fujiwara who is pictured below.
GranTurismo Launch Edition PrimaSerie 75th Anniversary
This limited-edition of the GranTurismo is the only one of these four coupes that will actually go up for sale, although only 300 units will be made, with four configurations of 75 units each. That includes 75 examples for each internal combustion version with a choice of Grigio Lamiera and Nero Cometa colors. 75 Folgore electric versions will also be available in either Rame Folgore or Blu Inchiostro.
With these limited or one-off versions of the GranTurismo, Maserati continues pushing even further upmarket. The company wants to build more exclusive one-offs in the same fashion as Rolls-Royce, and it is not chasing high sales volumes.
“We are not for everybody,” said CEO Davide Grasso earlier this year when speaking about the all-electric replacement for the Quattroporte. “We are for those that are willing to pay a premium to have a unique performance and luxury experience.”
