Suzuki has confirmed that the new Celerio hatchback unveiled earlier this week will launch in South Africa “in the first half of 2022”.
Suzuki said the new Celerio is “India’s most fuel-efficient car” and comes with a “new-age design, enhanced road presence, [and] host of safety and smart features”.
In addition to the upcoming Celerio, Suzuki South Africa told TopAuto the Jimny GL spec – in both manual and auto – is due to “arrive on our shores in the first quarter of 2022.”
This Jimny is expected to slot in between the GA and GLX models, which currently have starting prices of R318,900 and R356,900, respectively.
What to expect
As the new Suzuki Celerio will only reach South Africa next year, we looked towards its specifications in India to get a better idea of what to expect when it arrives.
In this region, the new Celerio is powered by a dual-jet, dual-VVT, naturally-aspirated, 1.0-litre petrol engine – paired to either a five-speed manual or “Auto Gear Shift” gearbox.
This powertrain develops 49kW at 5,500rpm and 89Nm at 3,500rpm – allowing the small hatchback to register a combined fuel consumption of 3.75l/100km.
In the features department, the new Suzuki Celerio in India sports a multifunction steering wheel, keyless entry and push-button start, electrically-foldable wing mirrors, a 60:40 rear split seat, and a 7-inch infotainment display with smartphone navigation.
Suzuki also said this Celerio has “bigger cabin space, increased wheelbase, extended shoulder room, larger legroom, and enhanced luggage space” when compared to the current variant.
The new hatchback now measures 3,695mm long, 1,555mm tall, and 1,655mm wide – making it longer and wider than the current Celerio.
For passenger safety, the 2022 Celerio packs dual front airbags, ABS with electronic brake-force distribution, and hill hold assist.
Price
The South African pricing and final specifications for the 2022 Suzuki Celerio and Jimny GL will be announced closer to their respective launch dates.
In South Africa, the current Celerio has a starting price of R153,900 – topping out at R185,900 for the GL Auto specification.
In India, the 2022 Celerio starts at 499,000 INR (R102,500) for the entry-level “Lxi” manual and goes up to 694,000 INR (R142,600) for the range-topping “Zxi+” automatic.
