Toyota has revealed the South African pricing of the new Vitz, its replacement for the entry-level Agya.
The Vitz is based on the Suzuki Celerio – the result of a partnership between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki in India to share the cost of research and development.
Despite this, the Vitz is R11,000 more expensive than the Celerio, as the former has a starting price of R189,900 compared to the latter’s window sticker of R178,900.
We put together this comparison to see where the differences, if any, lie between these two affordable hatchbacks.
Powertrain
The Vitz and Celerio are powered by the same 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which generates 49kW and 89Nm.
The hatchbacks are front-wheel drive and available with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), though in both cases the automatic is reserved for the higher trim level.
They also have an identical fuel consumption of 4.4l/100km for the manual and 4.2l/100km for the auto.
While Suzuki hasn’t revealed the top speed of its hatch, Toyota said the Vitz can eclipse 160km/h, so the Celerio should be right up there with it.
Features
Both the Toyota and Suzuki line-ups follow the same structure, consisting of two specification grades and two transmission options for a total of three models each.
The entry-level Vitz and Celerio GA have an identical spec sheet, consisting of halogen headlights, 14-inch steel wheels, a full-sized spare wheel, a multifunction steering wheel, rear park distance control, fabric upholstery, manual air conditioning, and two speakers, though a radio is an optional extra on both.
They also have the exact same boot size of 295 litres, and safety offerings in the form of ABS, electronic brake force distribution, vehicle stability control, and two front airbags.
It’s a similar story when looking at the Vitz XR and Celerio GL, as both cars come with 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, electric side mirrors, remote central locking, electric windows, a USB port, four speakers, and a 7-inch infotainment screen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Pricing
The chief, and essentially only area where the Vitz and Celerio as differentiated is therefore the pricing and warranties.
The South African pricing for the Toyota Vitz is as follows:

This includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 2-service/30,000km service plan.
