The new 5-door derivative of the popular Suzuki Jimny has arrived and is set to take the 4×4 market by storm. We take a look at how much extra space you are actually getting with the new model.
Adventure for all
One of the most hotly anticipated vehicles of 2023 is the new five-door version of the popular Suzuki Jimny. This pintsized 4×4 in its 3-door derivative broke sales records when it was released in 2019 and resulted in a lengthy wait time for prospective buyers as demand outstripped supply. The new 5-Door derivative is set to be a repeat performance but without the wait, as Suzuki is well prepared for the influx of buyers.
With the model gaining 2 extra doors, some more seats and a bunch of space, we take a look at how much more you are going to get with a 5-door derivative.
Interior space
The exterior dimensions of the new 5-Door Jimny have increased by 340 mm to 3 820 mm on the length, but stay the same with a width of 1 645 mm and a height of 1 720 mm. This means that the new 5-door models have a substantial amount of increased interior space.
All five-door models also have a unique design feature that allows the front seats to fold completely flat and integrate with the rear seats to offer two lay-flat beds. This will prove extremely useful for overlanders and campers who often sleep in their vehicles while out adventuring.
Seating Capacity
With the addition of two rear doors, the Jimny can now comfortably seat 4 adults. All South African versions of the five-door Jimny will have a 50:50 split rear bench, allowing the cargo space to be expanded in lieu of rear passengers.
Legroom and Headroom
The Jimny may still be small, but it’s not cramped; the tall roofline allows for maximum headroom, and if the seats are positioned correctly, legroom for all is adequate. The cabin has 1 113 litres of space in total.
Boot Capacity
The two rear seats can fold individually or together, increasing the rear loading space from 211 litres to 332 litres. this is up 126 litres from the 3-door variant, so you can now pack even more gear for your next over-landing adventure.
Verdict
The new Suzuki Jimny in 5-door guise may still be South Africa’s smallest 4×4 with low range but that doesn’t mean it’s small on the inside. The extra space that the longer chassis provides now allows more people to enjoy a budget 4×4 adventure without cramping your style or legs.
