Is your car due for servicing? This is how much you can expect to pay for some common repairs and parts replacement.

Mechanical breakdowns have a penchant for always catching you out at the most inconvenient times. The annoyance goes far beyond the disruption to your schedule though – when the cause of the breakdown is identified, you would inevitably be hit by the cost of replacement parts and labour.

This cost will vary greatly, and it is dependent on the make, model, and year of your car. Parts scarcity can inflate the repair costs, but so can the increased hassle of working on more obscure or technologically advanced vehicles.

Tips for Finding a Quality Workshop

The goal with car repairs should always be for quality repairs to be carried out, but not at the expense of your financial health. If you are having trouble sourcing for a reputable workshop, we have some tips to help out!

Ask for their rates

You wouldn’t purchase a new piece of tech without first inquiring about the financial inlay, so why would you drop your car off without first getting a repair estimate?

Always find out the cost for repairs and replacement parts before engaging in a workshop. Where possible, find out how much other people have paid for similar repairs. It is also not unwise to research the cost of replacement parts and the estimated downtime to understand the total cost better.

Compare prices with other workshops

If snagging a good deal satiates your inner bargain hunter, do not be afraid to get multiple quotes from different workshops. The 3rd party automotive repair industry is very competitive – you’ll have workshops offering to match, or better, the offers to clinch your business.

If you have an existing warranty, check with your provider for a list of approved repair shops. As a general rule of thumb, independent shops tend to be less expensive than dealerships and usually won’t mind if you were to ask for a quote.

Ask about the quality of parts

Workshops not affiliated with the authorised distributor have access to a wide range of replacement parts to conduct your repair. A lower quote may not offer as much value as one that is marginally more expensive.

There are 3 main categories of parts that you can use to carry out a repair job. The highest quality, and as a result, cost, is to use genuine replacement parts. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts are the next step down. They are made by the same appointed vendors, to the exact specifications as genuine parts, sans any branding or manufacturer support from the automaker itself. If you are looking for the sweet spot between cost and quality, OEM parts are worth looking at.

Pattern parts are also available. Aftermarket components are modelled off the genuine item but may be built out of lower-quality materials. Also, these makers may opt to cut costs by leaving out key features of the original item in a bid to make their price tags more attractive.

A word of caution though – what you save in parts cost, you may incur in labour, as these typically do not fit as well and may require a lot of hard graft to get them installed properly!

Request an estimate in writing

Make sure you get a written, comprehensive quote from the dealership or shop. This should include, but not be limited to, the cost of all the required components, labour, diagnostic fees, and any other miscellaneous costs such as tire disposal, hazardous waste disposal, or even shop supplies.

As there generally isn’t an industry standard, the agreed-upon cost to how much some repair items should cost, breakdowns, or any repairs can not only be frustrating but be financially ruinous as well.

We hope that our infographic has helped shed some light on how much common repairs and part replacements should cost you.

For an even greater peace of mind, perhaps you should consider paying a visit to the following workshops the next time you are in a spot of mechanical bother!
