Firecracker Performance
The current Suzuki Swift Sport, in South Africa, is a one-of-a-kind vehicle you don’t tend to see much of anymore. A compact, lightweight, sports hatchback with a realistically attainable price tag to it.
Powering the current generation Swift Sport is a 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol 4-cylinder engine pushing out 103 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque. This is all sent to the front wheels via your choice of a 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-Speed conventional automatic gearbox with paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel. While the power figures to many don’t sound like much, remember, the Swift Sport weighs just under a ton at 973kg. A typical hatchback weighs around 1200kg. Basically, this vehicle is lightweight and also agile to boot. Right there, you have a recipe for a hoot of a drive.
“Enthusiasts and petrolheads alike will appreciate the approach of the Swift Sport and walk away, as I did, suitably impressed.”

How Popular is the Suzuki Swift Sport then?
We contacted Suzuki South Africa to see how sales figures are looking for the Suzuki Swift Sport. It’s worth keeping in mind that because this is a performance vehicle, you can’t exactly compare those sales figures to a normal commuter hatchback as it’s apples and oranges. Performance vehicles err more to the leisure side so generally those kinds of numbers are lower. From the vehicle’s launch in 2019, up to December 2022, Suzuki has moved close to 700 units. Remember also in that time, a global pandemic happened which hurt supply chains universally. When we break down that figure, the automatic Swift Sport sold close to 400 units and the manual close to 300. In spite of the lul, demand is still present for the Swift Sport as there’s even a waiting list for the vehicle.
