This August, Suzuki hit the incredible achievement of selling its 80-millionth vehicle since the automaker sold its first mass-production car, the Suzulight, in October 1955.
In its home market, Japan, the manufacturer moved 28.9 million units in the 68 years it took to reach the monumental milestone, with the balance (51.27 million units) making their way overseas.
During this time, the Alto family was by far the most popular model for Suzuki, accounting for a healthy 20% of all 80-million sales.

Starting in 1955, Suzuki only made its cars available in Japan until it expanded to other countries in 1959, with its first production hub outside of its home country being established in Pakistan in 1975.
The fledgling brand’s sales took a while to gain momentum, as 34 years went by before the automaker reached its first 10-million units sold.
From here, however, the company experienced exponential growth, reaching its next 10 million in nine years, the 10 million after that in six years, and the 10 million after that in five, thus hitting the 40-million mark in May of 2009.
In April 2013, Suzuki surpassed 50-million cars sold, in November 2016 it saw 60 million, in January 2020 it eclipsed 70 million, and now, in August 2023, it achieved the all-important 80 million.
Across all these transactions, the regions in which Suzuki vehicles were the most popular comprised:
- Japan – 36% of all sales
- India – 32.6% of all sales
- Asia – 13.5% of all sales
- Europe – 10% of all sales
- Others (Latin America, Oceania, Middle East, Africa, etc.) – 7.8% of all sales
It seven best-selling Suzuki vehicles since 1955, according to the automaker, were then as follows:
