The Suzuki Jimny five door has been spied in the wild completely undisguised ahead of its imminent debut.
Details of Suzuki’s poorly kept secret, known preemptively as the Jimny Long, has leaked like a dripping tap for more than a year now, though this is the first time the five-door version of the Jimny has been seen without camouflage.
The image comes as sourced by Autocar India, which drew the screenshot from a since-deleted Instagram post, and from it we can seemingly confirm that previous renders and reports by CarsGuide are accurate.
The five-door Jimny, which is set to be 300mm longer than the three-door, looks primarily the same as its original predecessor, even down to the hero colour of Kinetic Yellow.
Given the similar design elements seen from the rear, as well as camouflaged spy shots seen before, don’t be surprised to see the five door look exactly the same as the three door from directly front on.
According to reports, the Jimny Long is also expected to share a drivetrain with the three-door, meaning a 1.5-litre petrol four-cylinder engine with outputs of 75kW and 130Nm. The four-speed auto and five-speed manual will also apparently remain.
While it’s likely that Indian-built Jimnys will continue with the original drivetrain, a rumoured hybrid drivetrain such as the one used in the Suzuki Vitara (though not in Australia) could be on the cards for Japan-built Jimnys.
If so, the five-door Jimny could have more than 85kW and the ability to drive with EV-only power, as apparently noticed by a photographer who captured spy shots of a disguised Jimny five door earlier this year.
Numerous reports state the Jimny Long will make its global debut in the first half of January 2022, with Autocar India reporting it will take place at Auto Expo 2023 in Noida, just outside New Delhi.
The five-door Jimny is set to be 300mm longer than the three-door.
For Australia, the likelihood of a five-door Jimny Long landing here is high, given the runaway success of the current three-door version, as well as Suzuki Australia’s boss Michael Pachota telling CarsGuide in September this year that the brand intends to be fully hybrid by 2025.
“Our model introduction plan… looks as though we could complete it by 2025,” he said.
“To do so, we’re going to have to introduce hybrid technology fairly soon – it’s just around the corner. It’s no longer a matter of if, it’s a matter of when, and we will be making more announcements on that next year.”
CarsGuide has also recently reported that there were, at the time, at least 30 pre-orders speculatively held by Suzuki dealerships.
