Here’s an elaborate comparison between the two newest cars in ‘CNG space’, the Celerio CNG and the Tiago CNG
Until now, Maruti Suzuki has had a single-handed reign in the segment of CNG-powered cars, with a popular lineup of CNG variants of its compact cars like Alto, Eeco, S-Presso, WagonR, and Ertiga.
The lineup just got stronger with the introduction of the all-new Celerio CNG. Of late, Tata Motors has also realized the potential and popularity of CNG-powered cars and has launched multiple CNG-powered variants of the Tiago.
After the ICE and the electric vehicle segment, Tata is betting on the CNG segment as well. With the introduction of the new Tiago and Tigor iCNG, Tata Motors has stepped up its game. But how does the Tiago iCNG compare with the Maruti Suzuki Celerio S-CNG?
Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG vs Tata Tiago CNG
The Tiago CNG offers a lot more like more powerful engine
Both the Celerio CNG and Tiago CNG come equipped with features and both target the same segment of customers as well. Which of the two offers more value for its price? Let’s find out.
Exterior design highlights
Out of the two cars here, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio S-CNG is the newer offering, as it is based on the all-new second-generation Celerio introduced in November 2021.
Compared to the previous generation Celerio CNG, this new version looks more contemporary and has a rounded appeal in its overall design. Since it is available in a single variant based on the VXI trim level, it gets body-coloured door handles rearview mirrors, and wheel caps for the steel wheels.
The Tata Tiago received a minor facelift at the beginning of 2020, and Tiago i-CNG gets the same design with no changes at all. The Tiago CNG is available in four different variants, with the top-spec XZ+ variant getting 14-inch stylized wheel caps, projector headlamps, front daytime running LEDs, and a rear wiper washer.
While the design is a subjective aspect, we found the overall design of the Tiago more appealing and premium of the two, especially the top-end trim with projector lamps, LEDs, and a new grille.
Interior design highlights
Step into the cabin of both the cars one by one, and you will instantly feel which one of the two looks and feels better and more premium. The overall cabin of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG has an all-black appeal, with silver accents on the steering wheel and around the centre console and AC vents.
On the other hand, the Tata Tiago CNG impresses more with its dual-tone black and beige upholstery, which certainly feels more premium over the Celerio’s cabin. In the top-spec XZ+ variant, it also gets piano-black highlights on the centre console, which adds to its appeal.
The Tiago CNG also feels more solidly put together with better fit and finish levels and build quality and has a nice thud while closing the doors. The Tata Tiago CNG is a better place to be in if overall appeal and feel are concerned.

The CNG powertrains of both cars have good strengths in their ways. Powering the Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG is a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 57 Bhp of maximum power and 82 Nm of peak torque.
On the other hand, the Tata Tiago CNG gets a bigger and more powerful engine – 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol, which belts out 73 Bhp of power and 95 Nm of torque. Both the cars are available with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. Both cars are not available with AMT.
When compared, both the engines have their virtues. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG’s powertrain offers a much better fuel economy of 35.6km/kg (compared to 26.49 km/kg of Tiago CNG) and is comparatively more refined as well. On the other hand, the Tiago CNG offers more power while on the go and can be started in the CNG mode as well.
While the Celerio CNG offers a more refined and economic engine and a better backing of after-sales and service network, it is no match to the sheer value and more premium appeal which the Tiago CNG is offering.
