Tata Altroz CNG Vs Maruti Suzuki Baleno CNG – Price, Fuel Efficiency, Boot Space & More

Tata Motors launched the Tata Altroz iCNG premium hatchback in India and the CNG hatchback directly competes against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno S-CNG. As such, here’s a quick comparison between these two premium CNG hatchbacks.

Price & Variants

The newly launched Tata Altroz iCNG is offered in 6 variants. Prices for the Altroz iCNG starts from Rs 7.55 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base ‘XE’ variant, whereas the top-spec XZ+ O (S) variant is priced at Rs 10.55 lakh (ex-showroom).

In comparison, Maruti Suzuki offers the Baleno S-CNG in two mid-spec trim levels – Delta and Zeta. These variants are priced at Rs 8.35 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 9.28 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively.

Engine

The CNG version of the Tata Altroz is powered by a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated engine with 72.5bhp of power and 103Nm of torque while running on CNG mode. However, in petrol mode, this engine is capable of producing 85bhp of peak power and 113Nm of peak torque.

In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno S-CNG also uses a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated, CNG-compatible engine. However, this engine produces marginally better 76.4bhp of power but less torque at 98.5Nm in CNG mode, whereas, in petrol mode, this engine produces 88.5bhp of power and 113Nm of torque.

Gearbox

Both the new Tata Altroz iCNG and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno S-CNG come with a 5-speed manual transmission as both car makers are yet to offer an automatic transmission in their CNG-compatible cars.

Fuel Efficiency

The Tata Altroz CNG is expected to be slightly less fuel efficient than the Baleno S-CNG as the fuel efficiency for the Tata Tigor iCNG is rated at 26.49km/kg. In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno S-CNG returns a fuel efficiency figure of 30.61km/kg.

Dimensions

The Tata Altroz measures 3,990mm long, 1,755mm wide, 1,523mm tall, and sports a wheelbase of 2,501mm. On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is 10mm narrower and 20mm shorter in height, but the wheelbase is 10mm longer.

Boot Space

The standard variant of the Tata Altroz has a larger boot measuring 345 litres in capacity. In comparison, the boot in the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is 27 litres smaller, measuring 318 litres in capacity.

Moreover, thanks to the twin-cylinder technology, the boot space of the Altroz iCNG is not only the most usable among CNG cars but Tata Motors proudly claim the boot capacity to be 210 litres. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki has not revealed any figures regarding this.

Safety

The Tata Altroz continues to be the safest hatchback in India with a 5-Star safety rating from Global-NCAP. Some of the safety systems include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Sway Control (BSC), ESC, TPMS, ISOFIX points and more.

Though the Maruti Suzuki Baleno doesn’t flaunt NCAP ratings, it still comes equipped with safety features such as 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, ESC, rear-view camera, ISOFIX points and more.

Thoughts About Maruti Suzuki Baleno S-CNG & Tata Altroz iCNG

With an aggressive starting price and option for a sunroof on mid-spec trim level, Tata Altroz iCNG seems to have a clear upper hand over the Maruti Suzuki Baleno S-CNG. Moreover, the additional boot space adds even more advantage to the Tata Altroz iCNG.
