South Africa recently welcomed a new Chinese crossover in South Africa in the form of the Omoda C5 – the first model to come from Chery’s luxury sub-division.
The Omoda is available in three specifications with prices ranging from R447,990 for the entry-level Tech up to R509,900 for the range-topping Elegance S.
This is what you can expect when buying Chery’s first premium offering in South Africa.
What you get
All three versions of the C5 are powered by a 1.5-litre, turbocharged petrol engine which generates 115kW and 230Nm.
Combined with a CVT transmission and a front-wheel-drive layout, the crossover is capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in 9.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 191km/h.
Its fuel consumption works out to an average of 6.9l/100km, and it also has a ground clearance of 169mm.
As a luxury model, the Omoda naturally differs in both looks and features compared to the Tiggo Pro range that Chery currently offers locally.
In the styling department, this includes an integrated “diamond star” grille, “piano-style” LED taillights, T-shaped automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights, and alloy wheels measuring 17 or 18 inches in diameter, depending on the model.
Standard equipment across the range includes keyless entry and start, a leather multifunction steering wheel, vinyl and cloth upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, cruise control, a wireless charger, ambient cabin lighting, and six speakers.
The dashboard features two 10.25-inch media screens – one for the driver display and one for the infotainment – the latter of which comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and voice commands.
The higher-spec Elegance additionally brings a two-tone paint scheme, red brake calipers, six-way electronically-adjustable leather seats with heating and ventilation functions, rain-sensing wipers, an electric sunroof, an 8-speaker Sony sound system, a 360-degree camera, and adaptive cruise control.
It’s also worth noting that the only difference between the Elegance and Elegance S is a visual package adding red highlights to exterior panels like the doors and side mirrors.
Furthermore, the C5 is fitted with assistance items such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, traffic congestion assist, and lane-keep assist.
Each purchase comes with a 5-year/150,000km warranty, a 5-year/60,000km service plan, and an additional 10-year/1-million km engine warranty for the first owner.
