The Suzuki Jimny has always been highly sought-after, but its desirability has just been sent into the stratosphere
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 and Suzuki Jimny are two of the most sought-after new cars on the planet right now, so much so you can’t actually buy the former or an automatic version of the latter.
While they may be at opposite ends of the SUV spectrum, both models deliver street cred in spades and command an unmistakable presence on the road courtesy of their overt boxiness, built-for-purpose chassis and, at least in the AMG’s case, hairy-chested performance.
But what if you could combine the style, attitude and opulence of the G 63 with the low running costs and rugged off-road capability of the Jimny?
Well, someone in New South Wales has done exactly that and, in the process, created what could be the coolest off-roader ever to exist.
Dubbed the Baby G, this bespoke aftermarket creation is a 2021 Suzuki Jimny GLX that’s undergone a complete and very convincing transformation into a three-door G 63 replica, right the way down to the side-exit exhaust system, AMG-spec alloys and black ‘G63’ badging.
There’s even black ‘V8 BiTurbo’ badging on the car’s front wings as per the real thing, along with signature flared wheel-arches, a rear door-mounted spare wheel, slatted AMG grille, high-performance Continental tyres and even fender-mounted indicators.
The changes are even more drastic inside the cabin, where you’ll find AMG-style quilted leather upholstery and trim, rotary air-vents, star-effect black roof lining, imitation Mercedes-AMG steering wheel and an aftermarket Pioneer head unit intended to replicate the G 63’s 12-inch infotainment interface.
It’s clear there’s been a great deal of time, money and effort put into this epic wannabe and that’s reflected by its $114,985 (plus costs) asking price – almost quadruple that of a new Jimny GLX auto, but still less than a third the price of a new G 63 – if you can find one to buy.
“Introducing the ultimate off-road companion, the hybrid of a Suzuki Jimny and Mercedes Benz G63,” the Baby G’s ad description reads.
“This hybrid combines the Jimny’s rugged capabilities with the classic design of the G63.
“Don’t settle for just any off-road vehicle, upgrade to the hybrid of a Suzuki Jimny and Mercedes Benz G63.”
Unfortunately, the Baby G doesn’t come with the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 advertised on its exuberant exterior, but rather an untouched example of the Jimny’s 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, linked to the factory four-speed automatic.
Of course, low-range ratios remain part of the package, but we can’t imagine the eventual owner will get very far off-road with those 19-inch hoops and 245/45 high-performance tyres.
