Chinese brand’s long-awaited Toyota Corolla fighter set to arrive Down Under by mid-year
The all-new 2023 MG5 small sedan will land in Australia in the coming weeks, with various sources confirming to carsales that customer and dealer demonstrator vehicles are en route.
MG Australia has not yet announced pricing or availability details for its long-awaited Toyota Corolla fighter, but carsales understands an announcement will be made soon.
Dealers have already started advertising the MG5, with some claiming its local showroom debut will occur “real soon”.
MG Australia is also calling for expressions of interest from customers via its national website.
Details of the inbound small car are scarce but carsales understands the launch range will comprise two trim levels and two powertrains, the former being the familiar Excite and Essence grades.
The powertrains should match those offered in other markets, namely a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol in naturally aspirated and turbocharged form.
Power is expected to range from 88kW/150Nm at the entry level to 127kW/275Nm for the higher-performing force-fed unit.
Both engines will drive the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch-automatic transmission, as seen elsewhere in MG’s line-up.
Our sources have also indicated the sportier MG5 Scorpio – with a 135kW/285Nm version of the 1.5T – will not be offered in our market, denying MG Australia the chance to take a swipe at warmer rivals like the Hyundai i30 N-Line, Kia Cerato GT and Mazda3 G25.
Stay tuned as more details are set to emerge soon on the Australian-bound MG5.
