Skoda has revealed what will very likely be the final-generation, combustion-engined Superb with the latest version of the brand’s flagship model bringing sharper styling, a larger choice of powertrains, new tech and bigger dimensions.
Due to make its world premiere in November, the fourth-generation Superb is wrapped in camouflage for now so as to not give everything away, but the disguise doesn’t hide the new grille, headlights and front bumper. Nor can it shroud the sharper lines and edges, the more angular shape.
The new Superb is larger, too.
The sedan is now 43mm longer, measuring 4912mm end to end, while the wagon is 40mm longer at 4902mm.
The sedan is 12mm taller at 1481mm, while the wagon is 5mm taller at 1482mm.
The wheelbase remains the same at 2841mm.
Boot space for the wagon is up by 30 litres for a total of 690 litres with all seats in place, while the sedan’s boot is 20 litres larger at 645 litres.
Skoda is keeping the Superb’s interior a secret but we can confirm that new cabin tech will include a 12.9-inch media screen and the gear shifter has been relocated to the steering column.
The new Superb will be offered overseas with a choice of three petrol engines, to diesels, a mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid.
Skoda Australia has already told us it won’t be bringing hybrids here, but you can bet on the more powerful all-wheel-drive variant landing here with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol making 195kW with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.
The previous generation Superb has been with us now for almost seven years and this new-gen model will almost certainly be the final combustion engine version of the Superb.
Skoda announced at the recent Australian reveal of the new Enyaq electric vehicle that a further four EV models will arrive by 2026.
Safety tech has also been improved with a new AEB system which operates at intersections and can detect cyclists better.
Skoda says the new Superb comes with up to 10 airbags including a centre airbag, and while the rear occupants are covered by curtain airbags, buyers can option two side airbags for the outboard seats in the second row.
The arrival of the Superb comes as the model’s sales lag behind those of the brand’s SUVs such as the Kamiq, Kodiaq and Karoq.
Western Australia’s Police Force is a big fan of the Superb with WA’s Highway Patrol adding 55 crime fighting versions of the big sedan and wagon to its ranks in 2022.
Recently Skoda axed the Style entry grade from the Superb range, so we can expect to see the new model offered most likely in the top of the range Sportline.
As for the price, well, the current sedan lists $64,890 before on-road costs and the wagon is $66,590. You can expect an increase on those prices while still coming in at under $70K.
