A-Class’s taller sibling is quietly shown the door amid slow sales
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class has been quietly pulled from the Australian market after years of declining sales overall and compared to the related A-Class – 81 sales so far this year versus 1305.
Only one B-Class variant has been offered in Australia since 2019 so it’s no surprise the model’s annual sales tallies have been well below those of the A-Class on which it’s based. Although compact people-movers remain popular in Europe the same trend has never eventuated here, where BMW axed its 2 Series Active Tourer back in 2020.
Mercedes-Benz Australia hasn’t provided a clear reason why the B-Class has been axed locally, but it’s likely due to a combination of its unpopularity and the fact its sister model variant, the Mercedes-Benz A 180, is also no longer being offered Down Under.
A spokesperson for the company said there is no stock of the B-Class in the country apart from a few dealer demonstrators, which are likely to be moved on imminently.
However, the tall hatch will live on in Europe and is about to undergo a similar mid-lifecycle update to the refreshed A-Class, bringing a few exterior design tweaks, more standard gear, enhanced equipment lists and mild-hybrid powertrains.
As we reported earlier today, the updated A-Class range is due to arrive in local showrooms in the coming weeks with price increases of between $5000 and $13,000 depending on the variant.
