The Mercedes-Benz 190E, introduced in 1983, marked the brand’s foray into the compact car segment. Its performance variant, powered by a Cosworth-engineered 2.3-litre 16-valve four-cylinder engine, set the stage for a more athletic presence. In 1988, Mercedes-Benz amped up the 2.3-litre M102 engine, enlarging it to a 2.5-litre capacity, boosting the power output to 150 kW. This move aimed to vie with its contemporaries, notably the BMW E30 M3, in the competitive touring car series.

Facing fierce competition from the BMW E30 M3, Mercedes-Benz responded by launching an aerodynamically enhanced evolution of the 190E in 1990, resulting in the limited production of 502 units. This DTM homologation special, the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II, showcased notable advancements in performance and design.

The historic rivalry between the Mercedes-Benz 190E and the BMW E30 M3 remains iconic in touring car history. Both models, the 190E 2.3-16 and the 2.5-16 battled fiercely against the BMW E30 M3 in various racing series. Mercedes-Benz’s response to the competition culminated in the development of the aerodynamically refined Evolution II, solidifying its place as a benchmark in automotive history.
