Full redesign, new platform, lightweight body and even mightier V8 for fearsome new GT roadster
AC Cars has announced it will roll out its most advanced AC Cobra ever in 2023 that promises both a revolution in design and engineering for the 61-year-old roadster.
Claimed to have taken three years to design, develop and engineer, the all-new 2023 AC Cobra GT arrives as the brand marks its 122nd year in existence.
Looking almost identical both in looks and proportions to the outgoing AC Cobra 378 Superblower MkIV, the new version is claimed to have been “meticulously engineered to be exceptional” using more modern “cutting-edge material and manufacturing technologies”.
Created to be a true grand tourer, the all-new Cobra GT roadster will provide a “new level of refinement” not normally associated with the hard-core roofless AC.
Developed in partnership with Icona Design and Cecomp Spa, the latest AC Cobra GT sits on an all-new bespoke extruded aluminium space-frame chassis.
Under the bonnet, an undisclosed V8 produces 488kW and 780Nm of torque that can be combined with either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic.
With a target kerb weight of less than 1500kg, AC says its latest roadster can sprint from 0-60mph (0-97km/h) in 3.6 seconds.
Once launched, a turbocharged four-cylinder is also expected to be offered, hinting that both engines might be sourced from Ford.
Thanks to a relatively long 2570mm wheelbase (for a sports car), and what’s claimed to be excellent torsional rigidity, the Cobra GT’s handling is said to combine its newfound levels of refinement with “performance-orientated” ride and handling.
Said to be designed for everyday useability, features will include air-conditioning, electric windows, in-car entertainment and even the option of a removeable roof.
AC Cars says it will announce full pricing and specification early next year when the AC Cobra GT roadster is revealed.
It’s expected to command a premium over the AC Cobra 378 Superblower MkIV that sells from £130,000 ($A235,000) in markets like the UK.
