Chinese brand to show off all-new electric hatch and long-range MG ZS EV compact SUV at Fully Charged LIVE
The new 2023 MG4 electric hatch will make its Australian debut at next month’s Fully Charged LIVE home energy and electric vehicle show alongside a new long-range version of the MG ZS EV that’s said to be good for up to 440km on a single charge.
No details of the MG4 display vehicle have been confirmed as yet, but odds are it will be an Australian-spec vehicle featuring the previously detailed 125kW motor and 51kWh battery pack.
MG4
“As the Fully Charged event debuts in Sydney for the first time ever, we are excited to be a part of this event and have the opportunity to showcase our newest model, the MG4,” MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO Peter Caio said.
“We know this model will speak to many people’s needs and wants in Australia and New Zealand as it has with other markets around the world.
“The MG4 is the first MG to be based on our EV-only MSP. This introduction of our EV-only platform signals our ongoing commitment to ‘Take Charge’ and intention to move toward an EV future.”
There’s no mystery surrounding the long-range MG ZS EV, however, which relies on an enlarged 72.6kWh battery to up the compact electric SUV’s driving range from 320km to the aforementioned 440km, although British versions have a lower peak power output of 115kW compared to the established Aussie model’s 130kW.
MG ZS EV
Whether or not MG uprates the long-range version to match its lesser and inevitably cheaper counterparts remains to be seen, but either way it will still be down on power and torque considerably compared to rivals like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV (both 150kW/395Nm).
The long-range MG ZS variant’s confirmation for our market comes as something of a surprise given local MG executives had previously said they wouldn’t be actively pushing to secure what will likely be the most expensive ZS variant to date, but rather it would simply monitor customer feedback and keep its options open.
MG ZS EV
“We listened to our customer’s feedback and have fast-tracked the arrival of our long-range ZS EV with a larger 72kW battery pack and 440km of range to Australia,” Caio said.
“This provides more peace of mind in terms of minimising range anxiety and matches our pursuit of driving electric vehicles further.”
Fully Charged LIVE event organisers are expecting between 10,000 and 15,000 people to visit the International Convention and Exhibition Centre over March 11-12, when other headline exhibitors will include Polestar, BYD, NRMA and M1CRO MACH1NES.
