Isuzu has unveiled the facelifted D-Max which is on its way to South Africa, however, its official launch date must still be determined.
“The refresh is planned for South Africa, but at this stage, we cannot confirm which vehicles or model year will be affected,” Isuzu South Africa told TopAuto.
“We are committed to keeping our media partners and the public informed once we can offer a more substantial update.”
The updated version of the popular bakkie boasts a refined interior and exterior design, enhanced comfort and safety features, and improved 4×4 driving performance.
As before, it will be available in single, extended, and double-cab styles, offering buyers a choice between two turbo-diesel powertrains.
What’s new
The main changes to the exterior of the D-Max took place at the front and rear, with the front end offering a more aggressive look courtesy of a higher and wider front grille, a power bulge on the hood, and new “three-character” LED headlamps with daytime running lights positioned in the upper section of the light clusters.
Similarly, the taillights now feature a three-level, L-shaped motif via the use of new LED tube lights.
Aerodynamic performance has also been improved through installation of an air curtain on the left and right of the front bumper and the enlargement of the tailgate spoiler.
Inside, the facelifted Isuzu gets a 7-inch digital instrument cluster replacing the small multi-information display on the current model, a new dial switch for the infotainment system that improves user-friendliness, and a Miura fold pattern has been adopted for the instrument panel garnish, door insert, and seat materials to supply a more “modern and luxury feel,” said the automaker.
A variety of new features and advanced safety equipment are now fitted, too.
The main additions comprise a next-generation stereo camera that enables front pedestrian detection and rear cross-traffic alert with emergency braking, which is supported by a heating element that reduces the risk of advanced assistance systems not working when outside temperatures are low.
The top-spec manual models now also have access to traffic jam assistance and adaptive cruise control.
As is usually the case with mid-life updates, the D-Max will retain the 1.9-litre and 3.0-litre, turbo-diesel engines of the existing model.
These units generate 110kW and 350Nm, and 140kW and 450Nm, respectively, and are available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Off-road prowess has then been sharpened up in the updated version by expanding the traction control area when the rear differential lock is activated.
In situations where a wheel loses contact with the ground resulting in a loss of driving power, the improved system “enables brake intervention of the raised tyre and power distribution to the remaining tyres, improving the vehicle’s ability to gain traction on rough terrain,” said Isuzu.
A Rough Terrain mode has also been added, allowing for better braking and engine control off the beaten track.
