If you want a new double-cab bakkie you probably want it to be four-wheel drive, or as many would say, four-by-four (4×4), in which case you’re looking at spending a minimum of R415,050.
A 4×4 foundation means the vehicle’s powertrain drives all four wheels and not just those at the front or rear, and it’s a good thing to have if you’re an avid off-roader, Overlander, weekend warrior, or just live in a rainy province.
In fact, the only real downside to a 4×4 powertrain is that it is usually more expensive both in terms of buying and repairing if a sharp rock damages something important, and they’re also quite a bit heavier than two-wheel-drive bakkies, which negatively affects fuel consumption.
On the plus side, they offer more grip in strenuous conditions which is not only good for the 4×4 trail, but also for safety. Around corners and on wet surfaces, a four-wheel-drive car has much more solid footing than one that isn’t, thus making it harder to lose control – but not impossible, I feel obligated to add.
A double cab also allows you to take friends and family along on your trip with ease, or to keep your belongings safe inside a locked space without spending extra on a canopy, both of which are welcome benefits over single or even super-cab body styles.
