The Range Rover enters its fifth generation after five decades as a stunning SUV that can dazzle on and off the road. We met him at his static presentation in Spain in order to assess his capabilities.
The fifth generation Range Rover arrives in Spain with design, technology, comfort, and offroad characteristics that place it at the top of the SUV market. This vehicle was the first luxury SUV and became Land Rover’s flagship in 1970, so it’s no surprise that the English company has poured all of its work and wisdom into making one of the greatest SUVs in the world. We got the opportunity to have our first static interaction with the model during his press conference.
The external design does not try to break the mold, but rather shows a development of the previous model, now with a cleaner, more contemporary, and intimidating appearance on the new MLA-Flex platform. The front is similar to the previous model, but it now appears to be more modern and attractive.
The Full Led headlights, which provide a beam of light with a range of up to 500 meters, are the key feature. These lights are not only adaptable in terms of steering turn, but they also include the new Predictive Dynamic Bending Light technology, which adapts illumination based on navigation data.
The door handles are incorporated into the bodywork, which is not only stylish but also aerodynamically helpful. For convenient access, each of the four side doors includes an electronic opening mechanism. With a large selection of exterior colours, alloy wheels up to 23 inches, and an individualization pack, the customizing possibilities are nearly unlimited.
The SUV‘s rear end is characterised by simplicity. The taillights have been reduced to a bare minimum, with extremely thin optics arranged vertically at the vehicle’s ends that go unnoticed when turned off. A black molding unites them as the single distinguishing feature, and on it is the model’s name so that it does not go ignored.
There are two external sizes and three internal combinations to choose from.
It comes in two body lengths, 5.05 m and 5.25 m respectively, depending on whether it has a conventional or extended wheelbase. With a width of 2.05 m and a height of 1.87 m, the remainder of the measurements are likewise large. Despite its small, it has a formidable aerodynamic resistance of 0.30. The BMW X7, Mercedes GLS, Maserati Levante, and even the Bentley Bentayga are among its key competitors.
Land Rover had to decide a few years ago whether to position itself as an offroad-only vehicle or as a luxury vehicle. Although it is apparent that its off-road skills are still excellent (which we have yet to check in this current generation), it is clear that the British manufacturer has decided to go all-in.
The cabin is brimming with fine materials that envelop even the tiniest detail. The craftsmanship is great wherever you look, and the new Range Rover 2022 is, without a doubt, Land Rover’s most sophisticated vehicle yet. Depending on the layout, the brand can provide an interior with four, five, or seven seats.
The residents are well indulged. The passenger cabin has sound-isolating laminated glass and an active noise cancelling system with speakers built into the headrests. A cabin air purification system with a PM2.5 filter and nanoe X technology neutralizes smells, microorganisms, and allergies is also available.
The seeming simplicity of the minimalist interior leaves room for technology, with various screens strewn throughout the cabin, including a 13.7-inch curved screen in the instrument panel that can be linked to a Head Up Display. If the additional Clearsight mirror is used, the inside mirror might also be a digital display.
The entertainment system Pivi Pro, which employs a 13.1-inch floating touch panel, is also intriguing. Although it is somewhat curved, it does not appear to give any benefits or drawbacks in practice, and the interface is straightforward, despite the fact that the quantity of options accessible might be overwhelming at first. It offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, both of which are wireless, as well as Amazon Alexa compatibility and remote software upgrades.
The air conditioning module is situated beneath the infotainment system’s screen, outside the multimedia environment, for quick and straightforward operation. There are four separate zones on the air conditioner. The powerful Signature Meridian sound system stands out among the audio options, providing an immersive experience with a subwoofer and 34 speakers totaling 1,600 W.
Up to eight USB-C outlets, a 15 W wireless charging station for smartphones, a fridge in the front center console, and even some suggested retractable footboards that make getting in and out of the car easier are all available as standard or optional features.
Heated and cooled front seats with 24-way power adjustment and massaging function are offered as options. There is also a superior ambience and comforts in the back seats, including a rear entertainment system with two 11.4-inch screens to which devices may be linked through HDMI.
An 8-inch touch screen is built into the rear armrest if the Executive Class or Executive Class Comfort-Plus rear seats are installed, allowing you to control comfort features, air conditioning, and the back multimedia system. The chairs offer motorized adjustments, memory position, massage function, and footrest, and may be inclined 4 degrees and reclined up to 12 degrees.
The new Range Rover and the Discovery are the only Land Rover vehicles with seven actual seats. Both the Range Rover and the Discovery Sport have 5 + 2 seats, which means two more little seats. This is not the case with the British flagship, which provides excellent comfort for adults in the third row, a feature that could not be verified because no unit with this extra row was available during the presentation.
By adding the premium Executive Class rear seats, the Range Rover’s cargo space is decreased. Although the loading threshold remains high, the suspension may be reduced in height to make it easier to put big goods into the cargo space by simply pressing a button within the cargo space. The cargo area is extensively carpeted and finished to a high standard.
The tailgate is separated into two pieces, both having electronic opening and shutting, like with its predecessors. When the gate is open, two leather sofas may be put at the bottom, creating the Tailgate Event Suite, which allows you to sit and enjoy the landscape.
It will be the first electric Land Rover in 2024.
After our initial static encounter with the new Range Rover, we’re eager to put it to the test off the beaten path. Expect it to perform well owing to the Terrain Response 2 system, which offers eight off-road modes that customize the engine, gearbox, differentials, and chassis components’ responses to the conditions.
Ground clearance is 219mm, which may be increased to 295mm when the suspension is set to its maximum level. The off-road proportions have an entry angle of 34.7o, a ventral angle of 27.7o (25.2o in the extended wheelbase version), and an exit angle of 29.0o while in the higher position. It also has features like a maximum slope of 45o and a wading depth of up to 900mm.
On the road, it boasts features like active rear axle steering, which allows the wheels to turn a maximum of 7.3 degrees. They will do so in the same direction as the front to gain agility in a curve or in the reverse to facilitate maneuvering, depending on the speed (above or below 50 km / h). Across the board, four-wheel steering is standard.
The English model also has an air suspension with Dynamic Response Pro that improves stability and adjusts the free height, an Adaptive Dynamics system that monitors the movement of the bodywork up to 500 times per second and adjusts the suspension accordingly, a torque distribution system (Torque Vectoring) or an Electronic Active Rear Locking Differential that improves traction in curves and off-road driving, and an electronic active rear locking differential.
The D300 300 horsepower and D350 350 hp diesel engines are the first mechanical options, with both sharing a 3.0-liter six-cylinder block and a 48 V MHEV system that earns it the Eco badge. The P530 is the top of the line model, with a 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine producing 530 horsepower. BMW designed this twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder engine.
All engines are coupled to an Intelligent Driveline Dynamics all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox with reduction. The range will be enhanced with the release of two plug-in hybrid models on January 27, 2022. The 440hp P440e and 510hp P510e will be powered by a lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 38.2 kWh and will have a phenomenal homologated electric range of 100 km (31.8 kWh net). The completely electric Range Rover will debut in 2024, making it the first Land Rover vehicle to be entirely powered by electricity.
Land Rover’s masterpiece is a magnificent SUV packed with technology that can compete in comfort and image with classic super-luxury cars like the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes S-Class. The 2018 Range Rover is now on sale in Spain, starting at 143,300 euros.
