The opulent Range Rover rolled into town this week – here's why it's a worthwhile option if you have silly money to throw at an SUV.

There are not many Luxobarge SUVs that can boast a presence as grand and opulent as the Range Rover with its blue bloodline. It’s no wonder that it’s a top choice for celebrities and VIPs all over the world. Whether you mean to or not, a statement will be made.

In a world where car design often features too much in the way of character lines and aggressive angles, the Brits bring elegance and simplicity back with their aim to make the Range Rover seem like it had been milled from one single piece of solid metal. While the familiar front end with its beautifully designed grille and stunning light signature is a joy to behold, the boat-tail rear with its twin vertical LED lights and squared-off corners is just stunning in its simplicity, proving that less is always more.

Range Rover was the first premium SUV to feature electric air suspension, and the 2022 model continues this tradition of innovation with a feature called Dynamic Response Pro and pre-emptive suspension that uses the Satnav data to adapt the suspension to road conditions ahead. It also works in conjunction with Land Rover’s semi-autonomous functionality such as adaptive cruise control and steering assistance to smooth out bumps and prevent body roll if it senses sudden changes in speed and direction.The fully independent suspension features the luxury marque’s first-ever five-link rear axle that perfectly isolates the cabin from road imperfections. All this imparts a feeling of floating above the road, rather than driving on it (and yes, it is that effective).

Occupants’ ears will get a well-deserved rest from the chaos outside, thanks to the noise cancellation system that monitors engine sound, tyre noise and wheel vibrations and generates a cancelling signal that is played through the speakers. This makes for a whisper-quiet cabin!
As is the norm with Range Rovers, expect everything on board that is opulently comfortable and high-tech; we loved the convex 13-1 inch Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system with its crystal clear, high-resolution graphics and gorgeous Land Rover font!
The kids will be thrilled to each have their own smart TV screen thanks to onboard Wi-fi, and who can argue with the four-bottle-sized fridge in the centre console to keep your drinks chilled?
As for the sumptuous seats, aluminium and wood inlays and overall design layout, there are 1.6-million potential configurations (or so says Land Rover) for both interior and exterior finishes.
5. That pleasurable V8 purr
Who cares about the petrol price when you can spend north of R3 million on a luxury yacht on wheels? Should you not have an appetite for the D350 diesel model with its torquey, straight-six turbo or the upcoming petrol-electric model, and you believe that there’s no replacement for displacement, the V8 petrol P530 will be more to your liking. And who can blame you, with 390 kW and 700 Nm of torque, catapulting you and your passengers from 0 to 100 km in a swift 4.5 seconds?
