Cars are undeniably expensive in South Africa, where even the cheapest hatchback currently on the market requires a payment of at least R162,900, but the world of luxury transport is on a whole other level.

There are currently 19 vehicle brands in the country where even the entry-level model has an upfront cost of half-million rand or more, and these prices can quickly escalate into the multi-millions.

This includes BMW and Mercedes-Benz, whose most affordable options begin in the R600,000-R700,000 bracket, though interestingly Audi still has a single “affordable” vehicle on the market in the form of its A1 Sportback, which starts at R467,300.

Jeep, Volvo, Alfa Romeo, and Lexus are all brands with cars that start in the R500,000-plus range, too, and after that, buyers will be paying well over a million to take home even the most basic Porsche, Land Rover, or Jaguar.

At the far end of the scale are the supercar brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini, where interested parties will need to dig deep into their pockets to meet the R4 to 6 million minimum asking price.

A handful of high-end carmakers such as Aston Martin, McLaren, and Rolls-Royce do not even disclose their pricing – implying the motif that “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it.”
